Without harrassing it, we need the right to show that animal that we are a force to reckon with - not a submissive and powerless smaller critter who can be take advantage of.

I grew up on a small farm. I'm here to tell you that any animal that is bigger than you is dangerous (the little ones can be too, it's just not a given). It might be aggression, an expression of affection or curiosity, but once a few hundred pounds of animal flesh start's bouncing around in my vicinity I get nervous, let alone sitting in my tupperware in the ocean where I can't possibly "run away".

So I agree we should behave in a way that causes them to respect us. And I don't think that flies in the face of the "No harassing" regs. Note the exclusion allowing farmers to protect their crops and property. At least that's the argument I'll make if Jerry has a problem with it  :smt002

I've met you Eugene (you *and* your big ol' halibut  :smt003 ). If you and I showed up in speedos it would empty the room before the music started   :smt044

I say we show up at all future MLPA meetings in speedos.  When our turn to speak comes, we turn on a boom box blasting Billy Squires hit "stroke me."  At the chorus we all stand up and make the gesture as we yell "stroke, stroke, stroke."   When they say we are being obscene, we say we are referring to our paddle stroke..."what were you referring to? Pervert." :smt003

As much as I love 80's hair-band rock, I'd have to suggest Clarence Carter's "Strokin" as the theme song..... :smt044

Seals are  entirely acclimated to kayaks and you pretty much have to bump in to them to disturb them, if then.

I rode the down bound skunk train yesterday at HMB..... now known by me as; Half Moon Bite-me.
Sealions were everywhere.
They were gorging on big sardines.
Under the yak, in front, young ones begging , following my live mackeral, [preoccupying me with thoughts of hooking one] and generally commanding center stage from the kelp beds to the harbor.
Hundreds are there and they have nursuries, floating pods, young gangs and even their own mayor.
I haven't fish HMB for 15 years and think that another 15 years interval is about right.
Today it is a veritable beehive of humanity, powerboats and sealions.
Steve
At home now....sulking, skunked and tired from endless paddling in fruitless quest for a bite.
I used up no bait, lost no gear and got no bites in 5 hours using octopus, leadheads, storm minnows and squid.
I didn't think that it was even possible to expose fresh bait in the seas with nothing at all wanting it.
So much for short, simple easy runs to get OTW.

I would definitely do a silent wackoff hand gesture towards Jerry if he rolls me while my fishing gets disrupted by one of these in the open water.

I wouldn't go so far as to call a lingcod filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a lingcod's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

that's the funniest thing i've read on here in a long, long, time.  way to go calbear.  we get the same kind of dillweeds around here with the elephant seals.  you're just showing these guys the type of respect they deserve, none.

I find this also fairly entertaining, yet ultimately upsetting as well.  I'll just say I generally treat people how I like to be treated.  (Well...up until they piss me off... :smt012)  But what I wanna know is why the guy is hitting us one or two at a time on the water when he could be standing at Moss Landing EVERY DAY and "educate" people on the well being of the HUNDREDS of apparently STARVING furbags sitting there.

Hell in about 20 minutes I saw at least 30 kayakers come within 10 - 30 feet of these guys.  He could get a blow horn and yell at them all day if he wants:
"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

Wow,
The case made in print...on a sign no less.

Quote
"Overpopulation has led to the spread of disease and starvation among them....."

Their problem is not overpopulation by serendipity....its called mis-management.
So they acknowledge and therefore accept that the herd needs to be culled....but don't you dare touch one!
OK....

You can kill em if you're a GWS....but if you're a human, its illegal to stress them?
Is starvation and disease not in fact a stress?
The only way the GWSs can cull em now is if their numbers increase enough to. :smt107

Egads....Is that the plan?

Egads....Is that the plan?

It looks that way to me. I'll go on record saying I'm uncomfortable with that.

Any takes on alternative management? Is a Federal plan to cull the herds via permitted termination our only option other than letting the shark population increase to match the sea lion herd?

I was talking about this at work, & we were struggling to come up with something general-public compliant that would do anything.

It would seem a "hunting season", like deer, would be great... but probably a non-starter with the public.
