Welcome to "Mike's Monterey Seal Buffet".  Right next door to "Sam's Silky Seal Socks and Things"...

Seriously, this is what we "need"...

Al's pictures of seals completely taking over public (human!) facilities is totally ridiculous.  Kayakers:  Stay away from the human facilities because we need to let the unnaturally overpopulated, sick seals sit here starving...

What a joke.

A seal approaches a gill net being closely monitored by native americans. Thier livelihood is threatened. Thier safety is threatened. A man steps forward with a 30-30. Cocks the lever. Levels off at the head and BLAM. No more problem. The dead seal washes by the shore anglers on its way to the ocean compost pile. Justice or crime? You tell me.

Those pics that Al posted are pretty indicative of a normal day at Moss Landing....the brand-new PUBLIC dock (beside the brand new launch ramps!) is completely overrun by furbags. Those facilities were much-needed and highly-anticipated developments. And now they're basically unusable....

BTW: I had a nice conversation with "Jerry" on Sunday while fishing near the jetty. It was actually quite civil. I didn't even get to do the silent wack-off gesture, unfortunately.

Eric you are so far off base thats what is a joke. Seals live in the ocean and estuarys. Humans have trod on thier space . Not the other way around. If you cant possibly co-exist then the GD docks should never have been built.

A park is made. They put a small lake in the park. OMG now the birds have come to stay here and there is birdshit everywhere. WE MUST KILL THE BIRDS! If my safety is at stake. Thats a problem. If you build something akin to a sunbathing and basking in the sun spot for seals . Who the F(*&^%$ is at fault? The seals? Surely you jest.

Thats exactly why I wont share my secret spots anymore.I dont want them to end up looking like a dock in San Francisco.

Here is some info about legal methods of deterring seals and sealions. (Does Shimano make a floating paintball marker? Hahaha!)

You're entitled to your opinion, Ravensblack, but calling me out personally may go against the rules here.  Do me a favor and leave me alone wouldya.

Justice or crime? You tell me.

If we were going to be technical, if you break the law it's a crime.

If you are being "moral" it would be a crime (immoral) to kill the seal if it were one of a very few. Conversely, it is immoral to ask a native American to sacrifice his livelihood because the over-population of seals hasn't been addressed in our laws.

WTF??  They list "electronic acoustic devices (Acoustic Harassment Devices)".  Isn't that per se harassment?  I mean the name says it all.

Also listed is:  "non-lethal ammunition (e.g., rubber bullets, sabot rounds, game stingers)" and "cattle prod (these products produce only a mild electric shock designed for handling livestock and are in no way related to “stun guns” designed for self-defense)"

In 2003, I wrote a utility patent application for a client who developed a piezoelectric incapacitation projectile.  It came in 9mm through 40mm calibers.  Hmmmmm.....   :smt002

All of a sudden, it seems like there are so many more deterring activiies that are permitted than I thought.
Wonder what Jerry would think.

I am not calling anyone out. In fact far from it. But I can have an opinion on others statements. This is the freedom we have here. I did not attack you or challenge you in anyway.

The facts are that alot of people think that all seals and sea lions should be shot. Thats just not right.

I think that saying that I, specifically, am "so far off base that's what is a joke" is personal.  Disagree with my opinion all you want, but don't tell me or any other individual how far off base they are unless you're willing to stand behind what you clearly wrote.

"The facts"?  Whose facts are you talking about?  Because they're certainly not my facts or ANYONE ELSE HERE as far as I can see.  NO ONE advocated shooting all seals.

I'm politely requesting that you leave me alone, and I'll gladly do the same for you.

What a drag if it comes down to all fishermen having to tote around a paintball-type thing to blast away some sort of bio-degradable projectile at sea lions to keep them from harassing us. Maybe there won't be many folks fishing by that time....

Now, I studied resource management in school, and I'm all for allowing animals plenty of natural habitat so that we can all coexist. Humans in general need to consider a paradigm shift in our daily thinking.
Now, that said, it does look like there is a problem here. So what do we do? Is the answer to create "sea lion specific" floating docks to replace the natural beach haul outs that are now popular "human beaches"?

I also wonder, was there no one around to chase off the sea lions after the new dock in Moss was built? Why were they allowed to take it over? The non-harassment laws seem like a good thing, but now they are preventing doing anything.

Ok, I'm out, as I think this thread is digressing.......

When wildlife in harmony w/ nature crosses the line into freeloading for a living they get relocated do they not?
If bears get frisky...they're re-located. Too frisky they get shot dead.
When game animals lose their predators, [ until/unless the predators catch up to them] they get sick and starve.
There is already a precedent for this in wildlife management w/ elk, deer etc.

Clearly and admittedly the sea lion population is not managed, is ill managed or they are afraid to cull cute, charasmatic animals. [ bingo!]

We need a better "wackoff" emoticon in honor of this thread.  :jerk: just doesn't do it justice.  I mean, c'mon, i don't care what your politics are, read the initial post.  its damn funny
