Was out this weekend fishing for perch in Monterey. I was fishing on the ocean side of the jetty when some idiot in a NOAA National Marine Sanctuary kayak paddles up to me and says," Hi my names Jerry, I'm with National Blah Blah". I cut him off in mid sentence and said I don't care who you are and I didn't ask your name. Well he was a little surprised by my reaction and continued to say I needed to be 100' from the jetty because sea lions were on it. I told him to piss off and called him a volunteer retard. He grabbed his radio threatening me with a fine by the DFG. My silent response was a wack off motion with my hand. That sent him over the edge. Much to my amusement. I told him to go hump some tourists leg. Has anyone ever been harassed by these dipsh!ts? I remember about a year ago one came by when I was fishing and made a similar statement about sea otters that came near me after I had already been fishing in the spot for a while. He was alright though. During the MBK tourney kayakers were all over the jetty and I've fished close to it tons of times. Is this a law when sea lions are hanging there? Or was this guy talking out his backside? Blake, any thoughts? I know you fish there often. Needless to say DFG never showed

This was the best laugh I've had all day. Shit, I stay more than 100' feet from the fur bags just because they scare me  :smt003

Thanks for the chuckles, made the day quite a bit brighter  :smt023

I used to joke you need to keep an attorney in tow to understand the DFG regs.  Now you need to keep one in tow to know where you can and cant fish.  I like your diplomatic style but I think you need to be more direct:smt004 :smt003

Get any perch?  My kid and I dove there once for practice and saw some really BIG perch

Best sentence I've read this week! That is too funny.  :smt044 :smt005

I've heard similar comments from Jr Wardens there. And I don't know what the actual law says, but the general suggestion is to stay 100yds away from hauled-out seals according to NOAA, the marine mammal center, etc.

Your right Allen, that effing busy body volunteer, I really hope he was a volunteer and not being paid with our tax dollars, had not a shred of decency in his wanton act of harrassment against NCKA member calbear. It's not lilke calbear's intent was to cast up onto the jetty and hook and hurt some poor innocent seals.
Fishing license in possession or not that story right there is funny whether it's true or not but after personally meeting Mr.DeadSeal at the MLPA meeting I'm guessing it's 100% true. Hey maybe it was Mr.DeadSeal himself. He had a NOAA hat and t-shirt on. Seriously though, unless you've met one of these seal loving enviro loons yourself well.....you've got to experience them firsthand to understand why they are better dealt with in this fashion. Bravo calbear.  jim

 :smt005 :smt005  Ya, really.

Generally I would take Allen's view. We really do need to cut the warden's some slack. But, in defense of CalBear, it's really getting annoying not knowing (because it's not well documented) where you can actually paddle your boat. Not w/in 100' of seals, not w/in 1,000' of the beach... or which beaches?? Are they regs or over ambitious "well mean-ers" getting carried away? Just frustrating. I spent two days finding out if I could paddle *through* an MPA in possession of fish (you can with your gear stowed).

I guess the Jr Warden provided some comic relief at his expense.

I could be wrong but I believe these guys are not wardens and do not have the right to issue citations. Just because they have NOAA t-shirts, hats, and stickers that don't mean jack and in case you didn't know NOAA is anti-fishing. Their rep was at the meeting begging for the IPA or worse. The one I speak of was a volunteer. A very zealous and more than slightly twisted volunteer. You'd have to be twisted to attempt to take a stinking rotten dead seal head into a dfg meeting. I was out fishing Monterey in the kelp with my father-in-law and one of these guys paddled up. We asked him questions about who he worked for and what the gig was all about. He said it was strictly to educate about local wildlife and it gives him a reason to get out on the water and paddle a few times a month. He was very informative about the area and wildlife. I didn't have an issue with him at all. I actually thought it was a good idea having someone like him to volunteer his time and knowledge, particularly when the hordes of novices are out there trying to get up close and personal with otters and seals.

I will however work on my wacking off motion in the event I need to break it out next time I am down there.

You know the funny thing is seal lion seem to make a b-line to us when we are fishing. We gotta be the dinner bell with the live bait and fish we have trapped at the end of our line. Short of whacking them on the head with a sinker or paddle we're far from 'harassing' them.
