Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I think it was supposed to be funny.
But it sounds like the best place would be inside the hull (in a bag or box w/your wallet & keys, etc). Because it seems like the other logical option is under your PFD...and that would suck if you rolled the kayak or fell into the water.

Not supposed to be funny.  AlexB is strongly anti-gun and thinks people who support gun rights are stupid.

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=70037.0

I don't think people who support gun rights are stupid. I never said that, even in the more heated portions of that "debate" you linked to.

There are plenty of responsible gun owners in this group, and I have no issue with them whatsoever.

I am not anti-gun, I am anti idiot-with-gun. There is a big difference. I think it would be a good idea to do SOMETHING to keep guns out of the hands of idiots.

But really... I can't imagine how stressful it must be to feel like you can't leave the house to go fishing without a gun strapped to your hip.

Leaving your gun at home when you go fishing is "not an option"?

I was thinking the same thing, and trying to go over the possible reasons as to why it might not be an option.

Here is what I have thus far.

Poster is batshit crazy (for perhaps very valid reasons).
Poster is a blustering gun-nut.
Poster is robocop. In this case I recommend using the robocop thigh holster, lots of WD40 and scupper plugs as to avoid a rusty ass.
Poster is a LEO (although I know a few LEOs who kayak fish without their weapon).
Poster kayak fishes in either Bartertown or The Citadel, and wishes to be able to defend himself in thunderdome.
Poster does not have a safe way to store weapons at home.

What am I missing?

Wow, I could respond with a few choice words for you...but that wouldn't do any of us any good.  Let me explain it, if you can't or chose not to understand, so be it.  I could leave it at home, locked in my safe with the alarm on at my residence, but I carry for protection.  Unfortunately with budget cuts etc. law enforcement is more reactive then proactive.  Anybody that believes that there local law enforcement agency will keep them safe 24/7 is completely ignorant.  When I go fishing I typically load my gear and travel in the early hours of the morning.  This is not the safest time to be out and about and I chose to carry.  That leaves me with the issue of storing when I get to wherever I am going.  It doesn't sound like you have ever launched at any of the local launch ramps in and around the Central Valley or Foothills, because if you had you would realize that they are not the most secure locations.  Now I could be an irresponsible gun owner that leaves there firearm in their vehicle waiting for it to be stolen, but that's not something I have or will do.  Hopefully this makes since to you, the comments about bat shit crazy, not having a safe place to store weapons, etc., well there not the smartest statements I've heard today....and I did just finishing talking to a few 3rd graders.......

Dang! My fingers were crossed that you were robocop.

I fish the central valley and foothills all the time (like nearly every 3 days). One of my favorite spot is crawling with neck tattoos, scary dark skinned people etc.  Many of whom like to set up their picnic on the launch ramp.

My solution is to get out of my car, and politely ask the baddest looking guy if he can watch out for the kids playing on the ramp as I back my car to the water. Maybe I am just naive. I have rarely if ever felt threatened, nor have I ever wished I had my pistol on me.

Heck, I left my $300 paddle at the launch once. One of the aforementioned neck tattoos took my paddle, gave it to a park regular who then gave it to me the following day.

lol.....what lakes do you fish?  I've always fished out of my boat or occasionally off the bank, but never in a Kayak.  My brother and i are heading up to McClure Saturday, figured we would try for some bass, and maybe drift troll for some trout.  Any suggestions on where to launch kayaks at McClure, Don Pedro, Melones, etc.?  Heck at least you'll know they'll be safe since I am packing.

I like to go to the lakes with the big fish.

I don't fish McClure or Pedro much, but I have spent a substantial time at Melones. I tend to launch at Glory Hole or Tuttletown. Be careful though, there are lots of toothless tweakers in Angels Camp. I don't go there with anything less than a Howitzer for fear that a rabid tweaker might wander past the park gates.

Is this bear wearing a Shark Shield?!

No, the bear is wearing a Shark Leash. However, the shark is wearing a Shark Shield. A Somerset-3000 Shark/Sharkshield paradox engine is the source of energy from which they draw to rampage. There is insufficient evidence to determine whether the shark's shark shield deters other sharks.

I pack at Melones all the time. I usually am kayak hunting deer or waterfowl though while I troll for fish!

Man, these wintertime gun threads can be tough. Lugnut, there is nothing wrong with carrying a pistol while fishing. In fact there are times and places where it could be considered quite prudent. You might consider bolting a little pelican dry box somewhere on deck specifically for your handgun. If you have to open a hatch and dig out and unroll a dry bag, it might be too late.

Haha. You made me think of my homies. I grew up with some straight thugs, but if we were chillin' at your local kayak spot anyone of us would be the first to offer to help you unload your yak from your roof.
