One in the rack, one in a dry bag in the center hatch.  :smt002

I've carried my side arm with me on many kayak adventures (usually inside my best) for the simple reason, people in general are not as nice as they used to be. It gives me piece of mind when I'm out in the middle of nowhere by my self. Sure I hope I never have to use it, but won't hesitate if I have to.

Thank You, I actually used the search engine and read through several of these posts.  it just seems a lot folks get off the subject of the actual question of ideas on how you carry, and turn the topic of why do you want to, you can't unless you have a permit, etc.  I am well educated on my rights and I will simply say that I can legally carry in most situations.......and I do because I value my life, and my families lives.  We live in a world that is very different then the one our grandparents, etc. grew up in. I wish that more responsible citizens did carry, but not going to debate that here.  For those who answered my question with actual ideas and suggestions, Thank You.

I think you need to balance the consequences of not having a firearm vs. The consequences of being caught with one, for the situation you are facing. If the only thing you are doing wrong is responsibly carrying protection then you shouldn't have issue. We seldom get strip searched by law enforcement if we are on the up and up. But I am also not telling anyone to carry illegally.
Personally I choose not to carry while kayaking. Unless I am camping, then I am not leaving it unattended. Then it's in the dry zip pocket of my pfd.

There's nothing illegal about it n most is the state as long as you are actively fishing and have a fishing license. Some cities or parks forbid carrying so know the local law, but most places you are legal and well within your right so there is nothing to balance.

Still sounds like a confiscated firearm from an uninformed cop.

I say this sarcastically, but...

What's the worst that could happen if you choose to not carry, while on the kayak? Death (your own)
What's the worst that could happen if you choose to carry, while on the kayak? Death (your own or others)
So it's kind of a toss up.

Loved Rich's reply re that,    quoted "

Having had, and been a tactical instructor, I can say this about handguns. 95% of people, even LEO and special forces, miss at point blank in a crisis. People wanting to use a handgun for protection against bears is a natural thing, and better than nothing, but bear spray is best.
Most people, at a range, under ideal conditions can hit a target at 25 yards. How about 50? 100? Most people are lucky to get six in the paper with a wheel gun at 50. 1 or 2 is more realistic. Beyond that, most people spit dust.
A charging bear, most people wills tart shooting way too soon. Miss. Then when the bear is in the effective range of your gun, you are empty. Even with an autoloader and hig cap mag, you dump the mag before the bear is close enough, and reloading cannot be done fast enough to engage the bear before he is on you.
Even if you wait until the bear breaks the 20 yard barrier, unless you are focused on the front sight, any hit is luck. People in a crisis that do hit their target, (a person) usually hit them in the knees or foot. The reason is that they are back pedalling, and focused on the attacker. It is a subconcious thing that you have to overcome through repetition and training. Another tid bit of info, in a gun fight, it is documented that 25% of combatants never fire their weapon.
So, when I take people into bear country, if they want to carry a sidearm,  that is great. But we are going to talk about that stuff well in advance so that they might be aware of it if it ever comes to light.
Bear spray is your best line of defense. You can spray a cloud in front of a charging animal and it will take out their sight and burn their olfactory senses. It also gives them a deterent towards people without lethal consequences. You will also likely be taken out of the fight too. Depending on wind, that cloud can blow right back at you, so be prepared.
Also remember this, if you shoot a bear, or anything in "self defense" the burden of proof is on you. There will be an investigation, and if it is determined that you were not in imminent danger, and killed the animal, you can and probably will be cited for it.

Just wondering how those of you that carry, do so while fishing out of your kayak?  Thanks

I use my sturgeon fork to rest the barrel on. It's easy to pick up and shoot at passing birds.

The best place to put a pistol when fishing from your kayak is your gun safe, at home...for a multitude of reasons.

Thank You, but that's not an option.....I legally carry, and even if I didn't want to carry in my kayak....I don't feel comfortable leaving my firearm in my vehicle for the day while I am out on the water

Simply because it is legal doesn't necessarily make it wise. Anyhow, this topic has been beaten to death over the years and I have no dog in the fight.

Good info here though, heard something about being able to carry while camping, didn't know it applied to fishing. Downtown Suisun becomes a little sketchy for a small town Kentucky boy once the sun goes down  :smt003 So many laws, it's hard to keep track of what's legal where, and keeping track of where you actually are!

In a dry bag inside a hatch should be fine while you are out on the water fishing.  Same place you keep your phone, wallet, keys, etc.

"heard something" is probably not a good foundation for asserting controversial rights.  It could get you into trouble one day.
