It is legal to carry a concealed handgun while fishing in California with out a CCW permit.

Yes, but...

The answer is not an unequivocal yes.  It's a qualified yes, as there is an exception in the penal code allowing for carrying while lawfully engaged in fishing, but the exception is narrow and requires you to be actively fishing.  If you are coming to or from the fishing grounds, your gun needs to be unloaded.

The exception also does not apply if the locality prohibits carry, such as state parks, some federal property, and some parts of some municipalities.  It also does not provide an exception for people who are otherwise prohibited from carrying a firearm, such as convicted felons, persons subject to restraining orders, and the like.

Of course, this does not answer the question of whether or not it is a good idea to carry in a given situation, only if it is legal.

Leaving your gun at home when you go fishing is "not an option"?

I was thinking the same thing, and trying to go over the possible reasons as to why it might not be an option.

Here is what I have thus far.

Poster is batshit crazy (for perhaps very valid reasons).
Poster is a blustering gun-nut.
Poster is robocop. In this case I recommend using the robocop thigh holster, lots of WD40 and scupper plugs as to avoid a rusty ass.
Poster is a LEO (although I know a few LEOs who kayak fish without their weapon).
Poster kayak fishes in either Bartertown or The Citadel, and wishes to be able to defend himself in thunderdome.
Poster does not have a safe way to store weapons at home.

What am I missing?

Ha! Thanks for the laugh.

Leaving my fishing rod at home? Not an option.

Fishing license? Also not an option.

Other than that, even the kayak is optional...

I am the biggest gun nut there is, and LEO, and the only time I carry on the water is during duck season.

Blanket law covering concealed weapons while fishing has got to be one of the stupidest laws I have ever seen.

Get BaitnBeer to back you up with a bait knife when some homeless lady tosses rocks at you, no gun needed. lol

BUT, the law says you can, go for it. I catch your barrel pointed at me inadvertantly, we are going to be talking...
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

That's some pretty high praise in the face of some extremely stiff competition!

Wow, I could respond with a few choice words for you...but that wouldn't do any of us any good.  Let me explain it, if you can't or chose not to understand, so be it.  I could leave it at home, locked in my safe with the alarm on at my residence, but I carry for protection.  Unfortunately with budget cuts etc. law enforcement is more reactive then proactive.  Anybody that believes that there local law enforcement agency will keep them safe 24/7 is completely ignorant.  When I go fishing I typically load my gear and travel in the early hours of the morning.  This is not the safest time to be out and about and I chose to carry.  That leaves me with the issue of storing when I get to wherever I am going.  It doesn't sound like you have ever launched at any of the local launch ramps in and around the Central Valley or Foothills, because if you had you would realize that they are not the most secure locations.  Now I could be an irresponsible gun owner that leaves there firearm in their vehicle waiting for it to be stolen, but that's not something I have or will do.  Hopefully this makes since to you, the comments about bat shit crazy, not having a safe place to store weapons, etc., well there not the smartest statements I've heard today....and I did just finishing talking to a few 3rd graders.......

I think it was supposed to be funny.
But it sounds like the best place would be inside the hull (in a bag or box w/your wallet & keys, etc). Because it seems like the other logical option is under your PFD...and that would suck if you rolled the kayak or fell into the water.

Not supposed to be funny.  AlexB is strongly anti-gun and thinks people who support gun rights are stupid.

But AlexB didn't post that. He just posted:

Which doesn't sound terribly inflammatory.  Archie Marx is a communist though.

That's what I get for trying to read these posts on my tiny phone screen.

If a person converts to communism will they start to catch really big bass?  Asking for a friend.

I don't carry on the water, but if I did, I would
want it somewhere quickly accessible and dry. So, I'd probably mount/clip a plastic holster under my center hatch. I'd put a shower cap or baggie around it for a bit of extra splash protection. Something that won't interfere with drawing it.
Carrying on my person seems like it would be uncomfortable unless outside my pfd.
Clean and oil it after each excursion.
