I'm new to kayaking, and have never been adverse to packing, but can you educate me as to why I would want to carry a handgun while kayaking? Aggressive sea lions? Pirates?

Wouldn't you need a CCW permit?    This is California after all...

What size pistol? I attach my shotgun to a lanyard that is attached to my kayak. I place the shotgun butt between my legs with muzzle resting on the ff mount, forward; ease of dropping the paddle and grabbing the gun to swing on a bird during waterfowl season.

California allows using pistols and revolvers ..

California Mammal Hunting Regulations 2015-2016
§353. Methods Authorized for Taking Big Game.
(e) Pistols and revolvers using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding projectiles may be used to take deer, bear, and wild pigs.
so it isnt out of left field to ask..
as for pirates and such ..Flintlocks  but keeping your powder dry can be tough...  cannons are pretty bulky and heavy on a kayak and tend to roll the yak due to recoil   ... plus reloading is a bitch ... :smt002

The question was " while fishing"...

There is a California Penal Code law that allows anglers to carry a gun while fishing and while hiking to and from their angling site. California Penal Code, section 12025 prohibits carrying concealed firearms in California, however, section 12027 provides the following exemption to this prohibition: “Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.” Remember that some areas that allow fishing, such as state and national parks, and some incorporated areas where fishing is allowed prohibit the possession of any firearm. Make sure to check on the local laws where you plan to fish. The California Bureau of Firearms in the Department of Justice posts a summary of California firearm laws online at http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/.

I was just looking into the applicaion process for ccw...   Not too difficult if your local sheriff approves.   California has sure gone off the deep end as far as gun control goes.  Big thanks to Moonbeam Brown ( $%&$*wad"    Just to buy a rifle or shotgun is rediculousness...  A "certification" needed.  or a current hunting license.. ( can't use last years license )      As far as handguns, Big 5 won't even offer them any longer due to the amount of paper work involved.
We desperately need new representation in this state.

If you use a really heavy handgun - like a big stainless revolver, you could do double-duty as an anchor.

However, a Sig or a Glock might be a better choice.  They are pretty reliable under snotty conditions, so it might actually when you pull it back from the depths.
Fish laugh when I paddle by.  Sometimes they laugh so hard they fall on my hook.

I use a iwb holster.
I found this on another sight.

   California Penal Code Section 12027(g)

"Section 12025 does not apply to, or affect, any of the
following:

(g) Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers, or
other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while
engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms
unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing
expedition."
