I'm not trying to downplay this but.....

This virus acts like the flu for the majority of the population.  Fever, bodyache, etc.  Rest and fluids and common sense to not spread it is the normal course.

I just don't get the hysteria over it.  Its not ebola or SARS/MERS.

I agree that awareness and hygene are important.
It’s 10-20 times more lethal than the common flu, it’s got a long incubation period (up to 2 weeks from what I’ve heard) and it transmits easily from one person to another during that asymptomatic incubation period. If it spreads to the same extent as a typical seasonal flu, there will be 10-20 times as many people in the ICU for treatment (while doctors and nurses are also coming down with the virus), and 10-20 times more people dying.

Please don’t take this lightly and act like it’s just another flu. It’s not. Period.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that we take this lightly, but the level of hysteria is not helpful.

Yes, the facts are the mortality rate is greater.  Regular flu is 0.1% and this virus is anywhere between 1% and 3%.  If you are over 70 or have a preexisting condition then you should be careful and thoughtful of how you go about your daily life while this is spreading.  (Similar advice that is given during flu season with the exception that the regular flu many of the compromised groups are able to get a "flu shot"; whereas there is not a shot available to protect us from this new virus).

You gotta love the geniuses who keep comparing the "numbers" from Coronavirus, which is in its infancy, to the overall "numbers" from SARS, MERS, Ebola, etc. after those pandemics had been controlled.

I saw this posted on another site. I didn't have time to fact check all of it, but from what little I could the numbers seem pretty accurate.

We are at day 69 since the outbreak:

Covid-19 has currently: 125.000 ill, 4.590 dead (Almost 3%)

At the same time in the day 69 of their outbreaks, those viruses were at:

MERS: 186 ill, 36 dead. (Almost 20%)

Ebola: 352 ill, 206 dead (Almost 60%)

SARS (2003): 7.800 ill, 631 dead (About 8%)

Swine Flu: 147.000 ill, 717 dead (About 0.5%)

Covid-19 has killed more people than the rest combined so far...

What is embarrassing is quoting Dreher in the first place.  He’s an illiberal antiscience super religious ultranationalist racist whack job - definitely not a mainstream conservative.  Who cares what that guy thinks?

That’s a great video. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. The long version gets into some interesting stuff on other contagious diseases and things we should be doing as a nation to be better prepared for them.

You know me well enough to know that the American Conservative is definitely not my publication of choice (I get most of my news from the Associated Press, NPR, and BBC). I only posted this to show a different perspective. I could have posted articles from a wide variety of media outlets that people label as "liberal", but frankly I'm not in the mood for that kind of "debate".

I don’t think there is much to debate.  I just think we need to listed to infectious disease experts, not actors, Hollywood, the media, random partisan politicians, or anyone else.

As for the tone of the president’s speech, he probably can’t come out and give a modern equivalent of the cardigan sweater speech after seeing what it did to Carter’s re-election bid.  That would be suicide and I don’t think there’s a need to fall on that sword.  I’ve seen plenty of criticism of the president, but last night’s speech was short and to the point and carried a far different, almost presidential tone compared to his normal communicative style.

Back on topic...

I work for the largest medical device manufacturer in the world. I run the 3D print lab at our Brickway facility. All non-critical travel has been cancelled. All trade-shows and conventions have been cancelled.

Between physician visits, interior training, and high-school STEM tutoring I have anywhere from 2 to 6 tours going through my lab a week. They have all been cancelled.

All upcoming field trips at my kids' schools have been cancelled.

Earlier in the thread someone asked about how to talk to kids about Covid-19 and ways to protect themselves.  I found this comic that would be appropriate for elementary up through middle school, even high schoolers may appreciate the information.  It could also be a frustratingly fun few minutes if you choose to print it out and fold it properly to make the booklet.  Anyway, I encourage folks that would like help talking to their kids about it to check this out.  It may help to assuage some concerns.  Particularly fun for kids who like comics:
