The main IHME model is flawed and being used and referenced.  It has been adjusted as data comes in.  It is useless at this point.

Who benefits from lying about the severity of the pandemic and shutting down the economy and taking draconian steps to control the movement and behavior of millions?

Honest question. The answer isn’t obvious and it needs answering if it is to be taken seriously as a possibility.  I’ve been asking myself this question for weeks now and I’ve got nothing.

Well that is the million dollar question. I would start with those that have been trying to erode our rights over the course of time.... there are certain factions of our government that want a level of over the people. They want people to rely on government.  For what purpose? Votes and job security.  Shutting down the economy puts more people on the government payroll.

So much for facts.  :smt012

Flu death rate isn’t questioned even though underlying illness may exist.

Peace ✌️.

I no more understand why politicians want to manage the population as a parent would their child, than I understand a sexual predator, but they do.  I don't have to understand it, but I am aware of it and will guard myself against it.  Soft drinks for example.  Vaccines.  Etc.  We don't get the chance to make our own decisions because we are perceived to be too stupid to make the right ones, in THEIR opinion.  The days of a politician as a representative of the will of the people is ceising to exisist.  The protection of the rights of the individual was eliminated a long time ago despite the Constitution.  Naturial selection, evolution are thought to be manipulative according to the arrogance of "science".  Down playing the role of religions in society are being portrayed as stupid and ignorant for years.  This pandemic now suggests it is also downright harmful, dangerous even.  Control is the purpose.  I don't get it, I'm not interested in making anyone conform to my will, but be assured elected politicians sure are.

Heard a conservative talk radio host (Tom Sullivan) ask an interesting question.

Do the people protesting shelter in place/social distancing holding up Trump signs understand that it is Trump + Pence + Fauci that have given the same National guidance?

Does it matter? I know it’s not “PC” to say it, but I don’t think that these people give a Duck about reconciling simultaneously incongruous and incompatible ideas. It’s all about ME and whatever my particular wants and grievances are in this immediate moment. Understand that Trumps’ fervent supporters are much the same as the President.

Let’s have a good winter thread.

I have a trip planned in April that may or may not happen. I have theater tickets that may or may not be good. I have to wipe my ass and it’s hard to find toilet paper for some stupid reason.

I’ve already dropped $8k on this trip, not sure how much I can recoup at this point if I ultimately can’t go.

The sharks are playing to an empty arena, Giants preseason game against the A’s is cancelled.

Economic impacts are starting. This all strikes me as panicked insanity.

How are you all impacted?

I'm now working 5 days a week 10-12 hours a shift in EMS.  I have to strip all my clothes off in the garage and toss them in the wash then shower before I can go into my home.  I wear full PPE and a respirator that I bought with my own cash my entire shift, I reek of bleach.  I had yesterday off and took the Kayak out from MLK jr Launch ramp in San Leandro bay and was out for 5 hours, caught jack but loved it.  Stressed yes, But I knew what the job was when I took it 20 years ago. I'm getting too old for this shit but now is not the time to hang up the stethoscope.   Stay safe out there brothers

Did y'all see the price of a barrel of oil today?
$-37 a barrel.

NEGATIVE Thirty Seven Dollars a Barrel!!
They can't give the stuff away.   They gotta pay someone $37 a barrel to take it off their hands.  Some places in the US now has gas for under a buck a gallon.

If that's not an impact of the virus, I don't know what is.

Stop with the facts.  It just messes up the editorial comments.  :smt044

I can compare the flu to covid based on data provided.

% of death from flu (worst case scenario = highest # of deaths/lowest number of cases) (62,000/39,000,000 is 0.16%

% of death from covid (reported deaths/reported cases) (40,565/764,265) is 5.30%

Given these numbers, covid is roughly 33 times worse than the flu.

To be the same as the flu, there needs to be roughly 25,000,000 more cases without anymore deaths.
If you are thinking why would you write this. Until we can test for antibodies we won’t know how many asymptomatic cases there have been. Deaths from reported cases is totally meaningless for comparison to the flu. There might have been 25,000,000 asymptomatic cases. We just don’t have the data. Given the numbers? Those numbers are incomplete. Shouldn’t we withhold judgement until we have real data?

Medical experts are now saying that anywhere between 30% and 80% of all Americans have the antibody, meaning they have had the disease.  With 328,000,000 Americans, even on the low side of 30%, that's about a hundred million people.  New testing is focusing on the antibody.  By knowing that number, we can know if we are saturated for herd immunity.  That would explain the decrease in cases being reported.

Antibody tests suggest that coronavirus infections vastly exceed official counts:
Study estimates a more than 50-fold increase in coronavirus infections compared to official cases, but experts have raised concerns about the reliability of antibody kits.
