From Bill Maher

“The media also seems obsessed with finding young people who’ve died of COVID-19,” he continued”. “The Washington Post says there’s 759 under 50 years old. Horrible, of course. Then I looked up how many under 50 died of the flu last year: almost 3,000.”

I cannot click, his face bugs me... :smt005..., thanks for all your analysis by the way.  Hope you're well, boats have been killin' the sturgeon, it's kinda goin' off...here we are... :smt006

Thanks, I hope you’re well too. I’m essential, so I still get to work. I have kind of a love hate thing with Bill Maher so I know what you mean. At least he’s not a total ideologue.

The graph shows a strong peak. That is not the whole picture on how deadly the virus is. With time we will know a lot more than we do now. To say otherwise suggests an agenda.

It's true that we don't know how deadly it is yet. What it does show is the absurdity and bad faith argument of saying it's no worse than the flu. And this is happening with social distancing implemented.
Well you can take that up with anyone that says it is or isn’t worse than the flu. We just don’t know enough yet. While true we are socially distancing, with the flu we have a vaccine and it still kills 60-70k. How many would the flu kill without a vaccine and no preparation for the epidemic? Compare them in five or ten years if you want something closer to an apples and apples comparison.

Umm yeah the fact that we don't have a vaccine is a big reason why it's so deadly. That's kinda the point.

Stanford has a new study out that is a worthwhile read. If they are correct, far more people have had corona virus than was thought. Effectively making it less deadly, and more like the flu. If they are correct...

IF the numbers this season end up similar to the flu, we can assume that with a vaccine the numbers would be lower than the flu. That would make covid-19 less deadly than the flu. The death count needs to be sorted out as well. There looks to be a chance the numbers are off. It has been suggested that there is a financial incentive to count more covid-19 deaths. Are we seeing a drop in other death rates suggesting they are being counted as covid-19? It looks like there is a big spike in the count in a short time. Does that show covid-19 lethality or that people dying of cancer and other diseases are being counted as covid-19 deaths because they had it when they died? The projections for the IHME model have been lowered again to a low of 30,188. 30,000 with no vaccine sounds less deadly than the flu.

So IF I follow the reasoning of e kayaker then this is just fake news and scare tactics and just a big hoax in America. I guess then the same must be true throughout the world. No big deal here just another mild flu bug. Wow that’s a relief 😅

You sound like fake news. Is the media hyping this? No the media never hypes the news for ratings. All I’m am saying is don’t get ahead of the facts. We won’t know the real death rate until we test to find how many asymptomatic people there are. If you say you’re afraid this will be very deadly I would understand. We have reason to fear a new virus we’ve never seen before. Just don’t put fear in place of facts.

Here's a fact: 40,000 Americans dead in exactly 1 month.  Also, this was in the ramping up phase.  If you prefer a more alarming stat, again a fact, 29,000 Americans dead in the last two weeks.  Sure, the flu kills a lot of people... in 6-8 months.  Stop comparing this to the flu.  This is much much much worse.

Here are a couple simple, verifiable facts:

Based on CDC data and a quick calculation, the average number of influenza deaths in the US between the 2010/2011 and 2018/2019 flu seasons is 37,461. The flu season is understood to last 6 months (Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar).

In just 1 month (circa March 20 to April 20), Covid-19 has killed around 40,000 people - DESPITE WIDESPREAD SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS!

It just doesn't compare to the flu. Period.

Stop with the facts.  It just messes up the editorial comments.  :smt044

I can compare the flu to covid based on data provided.

% of death from flu (worst case scenario = highest # of deaths/lowest number of cases) (62,000/39,000,000 is 0.16%

% of death from covid (reported deaths/reported cases) (40,565/764,265) is 5.30%

Given these numbers, covid is roughly 33 times worse than the flu.

To be the same as the flu, there needs to be roughly 25,000,000 more cases without anymore deaths.

40,000 covid RELATED deaths. Most of those died from primary health issues and covid pushes their systems past their limit.   I just don’t see the evidence to support what the media and politicians are peddling.  I am a front line first responder.  Our city took over the convention center to construct an emergency health care facility for the “surge” in covid related medical needs that are said to be overwhelming local hospitals. There is literally not a soul in the place.  Not one person but the local media still peddles the idea that we are overwhelmed.  Our two main hospitals have suspended all non necessary medical procedures so they are ghost towns as well (in comparison to normal times).  I am also lifelong friends with  a nurse in New York where all media says it’s at its worst.  She doesn’t see it either.   I don’t know what the truth is but I know what I have personally seen and it doesn’t add up to what the media and politicians are saying.

Who benefits from lying about the severity of the pandemic and shutting down the economy and taking draconian steps to control the movement and behavior of millions?

Honest question. The answer isn’t obvious and it needs answering if it is to be taken seriously as a possibility.  I’ve been asking myself this question for weeks now and I’ve got nothing.
