yep, if you don't know if you have a round chambered or not would put him in the unconsciously incompetent category as far as handguns.

+1 That is how bad accidents happen! As far as shooting the gar; not sure that's how I would do it( I would rather shoot it with a bow), but their mouth/teeth is almost exactly like an alligator.

Nothing that a gaff could not have taken out.  But I would never stick my hand in a gator garr's mouth, not even a small one, and I have caught a few of them, they are some mean SOB's.  Handgun, hmm a little over kill.  Of course where there is Garr there is often gator's, croc's and or caymen, so I could understand the back up, but not the shooting of a fish for the hell of it.  But then again, this is from some of the same people who brought us nuddling.

Maybe he was following the cardinal rule:  Always assume a firearm is loaded.

That vid would have been a lot more entertaining if he had missed the gar & blown a couple BIG holes thru that kayak instead.

Early on when I started writing for Pacific Fisherman, they had me do a bunch of non-kayak fishing assignments to better hone my writing skills.  I don't know if it worked but a lot of unprintable stories came out of it.  One was with 2 guys fishing for makos on a sport fisher.  Halfway through the day in the channel between LA and Catalina, these guys strip down to camo and pull out the automatic weapons.  I love shooting but that was kinda weird.  And a huge waste of ammo too shooting at balloons OTW not to mention they were polluters.

To me, this gar video represents 2 guys who used kayaks to access fishing grounds they probably couldn't drive to, not kayak fishermen.  I've seen a lot of worse examples that qualify more for the pussy award but these guys definitely have a shot at knuckleheads of the year.

About shooting fish, is it ever necessary for kayak fishing?  With alternatives, probably not.  I was told the guy who invented the "bang stick" regretted it, claimed it was unsafe, more dangerous than beneficial and advised people not to use them.  Most people I've known dispatch their big halibuts with a rifle from the boat into the water.
