There was a fish counter at shelter cove last year that was really excited over a gopher I brought in. He didn't know what it was.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was some shenanigans going on with one of the counters and it wouldn't take much to skew the data.

An angler intentionally misreporting to underrepresented the ye catch won't make a huge difference. A counter with an agenda on the other hand could do a lot of damage.

Now I'm interested to know not only where the northern ye were counted, but in the individual counter returns as well.

What agenda would a fish counter have?  That's a little too tin foil hat for my taste.  Anyways, bad data goes both ways.  There's more yelloweye up north, so there are more caught, which means the season must be shorter.  You can't rely only upon catch data, population density has to be factored in as well.  More yelloweye tonnage means there will be more bycatch.  Simple. Factoring in growth of YE population into sustained harvest is difficult enough with the levels of funding that our fisheries scientists get.

DFG needs to just open ocean fishing statewide! This forum and others, are going nuts with bickering and bitching. Not enough fishing, and too much time behind the keyboard. #wifibadass

Here's all the info you need to know about federally-protected yelloweye rockfish: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/groundfishcentral/tracking.asp

Nothing new to me in that link.  It's a bunch of crap data taken by mostly idiots that can't properly identify fish as well as crap data from out of towner fisherman that also can't properly identify fish either.  If it wasn't for salmon there would be no sampling.  Also, they only sample 20%of each month.  The DFW  uses the same math as GW Bush.  It's junk full of estimates that don't even remotely reflect the truth.
That is what now passes for science. It is much more cost effective than doing a full study. Count or measure a few and extrapolate the rest. How do you think they figured out global cooling, oh I mean global warming, oh I mean climate change.  :smt044

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

Jim, if that joke materializes into reality, I will run for President!  :smt006 I am not an A-Hull, and somewhat metaphysically wrinkle-free, so yeah, my line item veto would be that reg. I would do that for you.  :smt008

Jim, youre hilarious!  Awesome grinds braddah!  My 3 boys used to enjoy their fried fish with this Southern Tarter sauce I used to make.  Here's the recipe if you like:

1 shallot (finely chopped)                 1/2 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (optional)
2 Tbsp parsley ( finely chopped )       1 Tbsp Hot Sauce  (optional)
3/4 cup Mayo                                   2 Tbsp Creole Mustard
1/2 of a Lemon juice

You da man!  I really appreciate your videos.  Its starting to make me think about diving again!  just got to get my butt in shape and take same classes.  Thanks again.
Just Ted G.☺️
