My first time out on the salt was by reading a hookup post and knowing there were experienced dudes on the water.

Helped me out tremendously.  It was a good way of growing the club way back when. Now obviously there is no need for help growing this sport, but it can help folks who are inexperienced and maybe even save a life.

Tough call.

I added a poll to this post.  Vote up.

As far as random people showing up to hookups ... that's lame.   :smt011

-Allen

Not lame if they show up in a Members Only Jacket.

I could never afford the faux-leather version.  Had to settle for the all white cloth one that was on sale.

My nephew has one.  He thinks he is cool not knowing his uncle of almost 50 yrs old now (me) use to wear them in the early eighties.  I will have to steal it from him though if you guys vote Members Only :smt003

Here's another thing.as far as experience is involved. I can get around anywhere fine in a hobie but in the traditional yak I'm as graceful as the drunk fat guy trying to ballroom dance.now I'm not a long time member but I do have a few post how would you know if I'm a liability or not.just throwing the wrench out there.

For the record I love taking new people to and teaching them how to fish safely off there kayaks. This topic just got me thinking about liability. I'm in the process of becoming ACA certified for a number of kayaking skills and would love to take anyone out and practice some rescue and re-entry skills as soon as I compleat my certifications.
Dune12 I think common sense goes a long ways. If you show up to the beach in shorts and a hoodie I'm not taking you on the water.

If I show up at the beach it'll be with a surfrod in hand.I'm currently yakless.also why my reports have all been from shore lately

Couple comments, I am co-founder of Chesapeake Bay Kayak Anglers, still a director, now in Bay area because of work. We had monthly Meet and Greets, met in January, planned for the entire year, on a Saturday morning each month, with lunch after, targeting specific fish and in areas that were suited for newcomers. Otherwise no specific hook-up section post under general kayak fishing section/PM if you want someone to tag along.

Seemed to work well club has really grown.

Just wanted to make a comment about something I see on the bay all the time about newcomers and how they dress, out in my kayak and here comes the paddle boarders, outrigger canoes, windsurfers, kite surfers all on the same water, no PFD, no radios etc.

It is about educating, which NCKA members do very well.

I think all of this is personnel decisions we make, some like helping newcomers, some don't which is okay also.

I like no official "Hook-up Section" post in a general forum use PM if you want someone to join you but if going to have one I say keep in public.

I think the Hook Ups should be Members Only.  I don't want lurkers know when and where I fish!

We should also put tourney roll calls in a member only section.  Listing everyones handle and full name should be Confidential info.
++++10 fold, I fully agree with Jason. Limited access to all of our information is the best move here, less is more when it comes to our information and the accessibility to it by anyone who is not a member. Best, Mike

Some who are acting like newb's are being unincluded aren't getting that it only takes joining and making a very few posts to have access...

Yeah, I'm going to be working on an "intro article" of sorts that explains that there are some cool boards you get to access by joining and posting up a minimum.  I can make that article only appear to guests so logged in people don't see it, only guests and members that don't meet the minimum.  It gives them some context/background.

About the only good of having stuff like this open to the public is for non-registered members to get a feel for what the forum is all about before they register.

Let's add another option to the poll...having both a public hookups and a MO hookups section. I'd vote for it. Seems like the best idea.

What made me happy about discovering and joining this site was the open and inclusive nature of its members. You don't find that very often. I've learned tons from you guys and for that I'm very thankful.

I got really excited when I hit 10 posts so I could see the coveted "members only fishing report", but honestly, there's not really anything all that precious posted on it. Nothing one couldn't find from any number of fishing boards.

Access to the hook up boards, for me is useful because I want to meet people on here, become friends and fish together, not because I want to go steal shit.  Now, if that's gonna change to 250 posts and you have to have been a member for a certain amount of time, I won't be able to do that.
It sucks that some crabs were stolen, in a perfect world, nothing bad would ever happen. Clearly, this info was obtained from sime bad guy, scouring the hook ups. NotThe fact that we're smack in the middle of crabbing season with pots floating around in historical crabbing areas unattended.

But what do I know. I'm just some newb that needs my hand held or I might fall out of my boat and sue you.

Maybe you should have to have 1,000 posts and be a member for 10 years before you can see hook ups. Maybe it should only be invite like the moose lodge or something. Or only open to the sons and daughters of Jim Sammons and Drew Gregory. Or how about a spelling and grammar test to join?

I'm ranting, I know. I'd just hate to see this great site that I've really come to love turn into some exclusive, paranoid plastic yacht club.

what if you add a rating kind of like a ski mountain for the hookups like if you are doing a hook up a Hennesy lake "open to everyone basic skills  recomended" and if you are doing Sonoma Coast something like "Some advanced skills and equipment required, not for newbies"

If you are attending PFD and VHF Radio required.

I can't really imagine some weirdo lurker watching NCKA hookups to plan pot raids. More like some dirtball with a Zodiac who happens to be soaking in the same general vicinity and spies a couple floats. Maybe they do though, I dunno.

If some random non-NCKA dude showed up to fish salt and was drastically ill equipped, I would not go out if he was determined to go anyways. Fresh...I guess I would just have to see how it felt, depending on season or water temps. It would still be weird though.

I think that there are many lurkers because this forum could be intimidating to beginners, seeing so many successful kayak fishers. It is also easy to see the tight knit brotherhood shared here and there are a few who might be a tad overprotective over it.

I'm all for making hookups MO, but I think that making it harder to obtain might detract from helping lurkers to go ahead and join. I don't think that most of us here see NCKA as an elitist organization.

I haven't kept track of my posts, but will comment. First there are a few things. How do you guys know the guy in the shirt and shorts hasen't seen you guys on the water there before. And he thought he would try it. He just happened to show up in that spot at the same time as you.
Second what if you had an emergency and he was there to help you out. Would you ask how many posts he has, put on the board before he helped you? I think not.
Third as for the pots being taken, there are a lot of boats on the water. they see your markers, How do you expect to stop that.
Fourth listing tournaments, this is where it gets touchy. Your posting hey guys I'm gone from home for the weekend. Thieves exist every where.
Fifth and last what would Mooch say! From what I read he would say leave it public. As he liked to help people.
Personally If there is the option to have both. It would be best of both worlds. And I would make sure to avoid the areas where people are fishing in the MO section. Because I would not want to be thought as a lurker, and infringing on your private spot. When you guys leave, make sure your no trespassing sign has a nice float and anchor. So those fish thieves don't take your fish.  :smt044  :smt044  :smt044
