there should be both, a public as well as a private hookup section.

i LIKE THIS OPTION BEST! Oops, caps lock off.
Can you add this option to the poll, polepole?

So I guess what most of you are saying, is that if you know how to put up 10 or 30 posts, than you must know how to handle yourself on the big blue.
Glad you guys figured that out

I'm fine with MO hookups.
but yeah, posts don't equal knowledge.

I haven't posted an open hookup in years so I might not even listen to me....

more often these days, I plan to fish on the down low, and then run into a group of NCKA folks at the spot already :smt044 I don't mind it :smt006

I guess IMO, there should be both, a public as well as a private hookup section. This would allow you to invite new members to join in a safe outing with other experienced members, and also allow for more advanced anglers to enjoy a hookup without having to tend to a newb.

Do you really mean a "public" and a "private" section, or do you mean a "newbie" and an "experienced"?

I'm not sure how a non-member can even coordinate with a hookup as they can't post or PM.

Basically, agree with what members Ariel, Dustin, Pat.... have said. Create an additional board for Members Only Hookups.

I have owned the same Cobra Fish N Dive for 10 years, have been on this board since its inception (and the board that preceded it).
But, I don't kayak very much since I am not a skilled swimmer(like others that swimmers, divers, surfers), preferring to stay in the bays primarily.  People that got me into kayaking like Elric and then later big Dave know this.. and have accepted my limitations when they kayak with me (with Elric even helping me with a self-rescue when I first started).  So, therefore, I know my limits, and stick to places like ARW, OAP, China Camp, Richmond Rockwall, and the backside of Berkeley and do paddles just far enough to get bit (only having fished the ocean at Santa Cruz a handful of times total and Linda Mar once).

Of course, everyone assumes the risks of kayaking for themselves...only ultimately relying on one's self, and should let others know of any limitations  they have and how far you intend to venture out from shore to fish.  I feel comfortable enough to go a few places by myself now... but it is just good to know that there are others on the water that day in kayaks (even if you don't know them).

My understanding is that the members only section can only be seen by members with "X" amount of posts, where the public forum's are seen by all. The public would be an open invite for all levels, where the private forum's would be for specific invite levels.

Well, we can do pretty much anything.  But public is open to non-registered visitors.  For member's only access, we can establish whatever minimum we want on a board by board basis.

I added a poll to this post.  Vote up.

As far as random people showing up to hookups ... that's lame.   :smt011

-Allen

Not lame if they show up in a Members Only Jacket.

I could never afford the faux-leather version.  Had to settle for the all white cloth one that was on sale.

The threshold for MO hookups should be much higher then. Like 250+ posts or some combination of posts and years of membership. Or maybe by invitation only or by request only with a decision made by the moderators. It probably won't affect my uaseage either way.

My experience is that Most hookups happen by PM or text anyway.  The hookups section is mostly useful to me for out of town hookups.  I'm usually around an happy to take out an NCKA bro who is in town and posts a hookup.

My experience is probably typical of the Humboldt crowd but not of the 95% of the folks on the board who are down south.

The moderators will not in any way be making any decision about what you guys choose to post in a hookups section.  And we shouldn't rely on the forum to make any sort of "quality" judgments as to who is going with who.  That responsibility is up to the individuals involved.  Don't be afraid to ask someone you don't know what their experience level is and establish your own threshold as to what level you are comfortable going with.

IMHO. the hookups section should be left public.  Of course there will be the typical greenhorn yahoos coming out in shorts and t-shirts without the proper gear, but that is also a teaching opportunity.  We all ( well most of us) started with little or no knowledge, and have learned through other members how to properly equip ourselves and why.  One of the biggest reasons I joined NCKA a few years back was the way our community was willing to share its information and treat new members like family. I'd hate to see that be lost by becoming more and more exclusive. Like someone else said, there are many times more hookups set through phone calls and PMs than there are publicly posted anyways.

Now, as for the members only areas, I like the concept that Eric has set up for the GS entries.  Any members looking for access should be "invited" by a known NCKA member.  Like many have said, post counts, no matter how high, can be easily overcome by random meaningless posts. It would be more work for the mods, but probably the best way to protect NCKA's "proprietary information"  :smt003

You read something into that that isn't there.
I'm not at all suggesting the moderators controlling the content. Just the people who have access.

I like the GS system of vouching for folks too.

Can any one explain how liability work in our situation? If a hook up is posted and a new member is invited to come along. if something goes wrong and the new member doesn't make it back are you liable for posting the hook up?
What if its at a tournament? is the organizer liable? are all contestants of said tournament liable?
Can you hold NCKA and all its members responsible?
It may sound far fetched but I wonder if its possible. Like the kid who flipped his Yamaha Rhino and his parents sued all the aftermarket companies for making products (that they bought) to make the vehicle unsafe.
