Hey All-
Was looking at a boat for myself and I started thinking about kayak color and its affect on attraction of GWS. I did some research and found this on another forum.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/showthread.php?t=9359

There are some Interesting ideas that would be cheap enough to give me a sense of security. Im just not sure if they would be a false sense of security.

I also thought about a bottom paint scheme to mimic a killer whales pattern. They are the only mammal I know that hunts GWS. Just watched a video from a tourist boat on the farralon islands where an orca turned a GWS upside down causing a catatonic reaction and then destroying it. It was enough for the hundred or so GWS around the islands to bug out.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers!

Lot's of discussion on previous threads.  All theories have been debunked so far... from color to patterns, etc.

My personal theory id that an Adventure Island looks like a mamma and 2 pups.  Lol.  Just jealous...

+1, if it's your day, then nothing will deter the landlord from collecting!

yeah, I'm not a believer in color making a diff. And the big bold stripes don't work either.

BUT, I could be wrong, it would depend on the mood of the shark that particular day methinks.

they might hit a kayak because they think it is a seal, or they might hit it just because they are curious or ornery, there's really no telling.

I think awareness and sticking close to your partners the best defense.

First thing to consider is, Can a GWS distinguish all the colors mentioned?  I personally think they see the shape first and get curious to investigate with a bite.

A few years ago when I was PBer and launching for SC Harbor, 2 GWS researchers were launching the their boat next to me.
They had a sea lion cut out made from an old surf board and studying how GWS attack.  They told me they would troll this behind their boat at Ano Nuevo and gotten a few bites.  It was painted Black.

I hear there is a transparency factor. so if you own a light colored, say yellow kayak, dont go putting stripes or patters on the bottom. It may make the landlord single you out. I really dont think theres much defense but a sharkshield and fishing RIGHT NEXT to your buddies. Good luck to all  :smt120

I surfed web 3 months ago and talked to different kayak dialler's - all trusted sources concluded that in most shark attack cases the kayak color does not play any role.

I just do not like Myth Busters - especially after last year incident :)

P.S. major myth is that yellow is the most attracted color, but yellow is a major color for kayaks

Your chances of getting attacked in a kayak are pretty slim. Your chances of getting run over by a power boat are much greater. Yellow is a highly visible color and that's what you want, to be seen. I've owned a dark green kayak and it was invisable to every one on the water. According to the survey it's safer against sharks but that really doesn't matter if I get run over. I had a few really close calls down in San Diego bay with drunk boaters so when choosing my next boat I went with a light color that is more visible. Don't have that problem any more

The good old days.

I agree that both are dangerous but if we look at the numbers in our little group one is more prevalent

If you fish the ocean, use the "buddy system"......

as far as kayak color = IMO, sharks don't care....just like the Honey Badger...

I have a few thoughts..., and I'm no expert either.  I think there's merit to their attacking based on being curious and territorial.  I also think they attack aggressively from below (Cambria event) because our boats are long and appear like a sealion or elephant seal, as they block the sun from below, much like a sunning sealion does.  Throw in your legs and feet as the hang to the sides like sealion fins.

The same principle is true with albacore tuna, charging to the surface after a boat goes by.  I always made a point of getting in behind a container ship when available while trolling for tuna.  The ship and prop bubbles created, blocked the sun like a big school of bait.  I can't tell you how many times I've hooked tuna behind ships.  Just a thought

My life insurance investment for this activity is the Shark Shield.  I hope it's as good as they lead us to believe.
