Your chances of getting attacked in a kayak are pretty slim. Your chances of getting run over by a power boat are much greater.

I personally know three people who have been attacked by GWS. I don't know anybody who has been run over by a boat.

Just sayin'...

Maybe someone should ask the shark what color he prefers.

I watched a show during shark about "Air Jaws".  They were towing a flat piece of foam or cardboard shaped like a seal.  GWSs were catching serious airtime attacking the silhouette.  IMO I don't think GWS care about color.

I've thought about painting my yak to look like a Killer Whale but after watching that show, I need to figure out a way to look less like a seal/snack.

After a few years, I don't think this is possible unless one only fishes freshwater. GWS target silhouettes from below, and there's just no way to break up a kayak form from that view.

Plus, sharks "attack" for reasons other than food. Primarily I think they 'investigate" things that may or may not be food with their mouths. You could have a bright fushcia kayak or a green camo one, and if the shark is intrigued it's going to come in close for either a look (good) or a munch (not as good). There's also the problem that they can get frustrated and pissed off when they encounter something that startles them. This is probably due to their status in the food chain.

other than fishing in groups and using a shark shield (both of which are arguable in their effectiveness) I don't think there is much you can do.

a 14 footer was just reported cruising Marina beach yesterday, and I think there was one spotted north of SF bay as well.

If you really dont want to die due to kayak fishing. Stay of the freeways on the way to your favorite location.

Silouette factor is it. Then thinking about it, The shark pobably thinks it is going to bite into a nice fleshy, soft, fat seal, not,so it splits.

Does anyone even know if sharks can see colors?

im kinda curious wouldnt an ai look like a pod of seals by itself.i mean if its main reason for attacking is shiloutte from underneath wouldnt an ai look like a sealion with two pups floating at the surface, anyway im getting a sharkshield his yak was yellow i dont know if there was any other yellow yaks in the group but mines yellow also
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

On the Discovery channel ,a large boats' swim platform or some such is always being bitten it seems. Not afraid at all of a 30' boat. Usually after some sort of chumming.  A couple of years ago a commercial fisherman reported pulling a large Hali out of the water just as the jaws closed, up by Davenport. Gotta worry about catching that dream fish and it comes up to color with company.

Just saw this article on a product called shark camo. Made by a couple outta Grover beach. May be voodoo, may work. It is based upon contrasting patterns shared by oceanic creatures that sharks do not eat(pilot fish, poisonous sea snakes, etc.

One of our local ncka fish nerds (bsteves, I think) said that pattern will not work on our local population because they are separate population to the gws  that evolved around the "nasty prey" with that b&w contrast pattern.
Adam had that pattern on his yak and it didnt work.
