I have a friend that is a professional painter in graphics that I kicked around the idea of a Killer Whale image painted on the bottom of my Yak. With Rock season approaching and all the talk about anti shark devices that seem to be pretty pricey I thought that maybe an image of a KW might suffice like using a deco in reverse. Then I started thinking that to good of an image might attract KW who are very curious. Any thoughts out there?

I have.... :smt003
Just trying to get soom feed back from the group about an idea that has been proposed before, but doing it right. However, before going to the expense was wondering wheather I was doing myself a disservice by attracting another larger predator. With my luck I would become a toy for the KW which I don't think would be to fun :smt009

Does anyone know of any real, credible stories of kayakers being attacked by orcas? During my short time up in AK almost every trip I took out had someone who was freaked out by killer whales. But, has it ever happened (in real life, not that silly energy drink ad on the web)? I paddled in areas where the whales were seen regularly & they never acted aggressive or even that curious around kayaks. My personal opinion is that orcas are much more intelligent than say gray whales ,who scare me more since they seem to like swimming beneath kayaks without knowing it.
Unless there is some info out there that I have missed, I do not think orcas are nearly the danger that GWS are here in Cali in the depths we normally fish.

Actually there is a theory out there that Great White mating is linked to them congregating around dead whales, so the idea of a lifeless KW bobbing around on the surface seems like it could backfire... You could find yourself in the middle of a landlord love-fest.

But for the purpose of decoration, maybe you could go with one of the Inuit interpretations...

I agree.... also killer whales are usually bigger than your kayak, so painting one on the bottom might look more like seal than anything else.

I'm no shark expert, but if you were going to paint anything on the bottom of your yak, it just makes sense to go with some type of camouflage, big bold stripes, or anything to help break up the silhouette.

I would consider something like what Tote did to his yellow Prowler.

I wonder what colors would do the best job of breaking up the outline of a yak... that is probably a question for you divers... looking up from underwater do you really see colors, or is it a contrast thing... like dark lures in dirty water...

Curious and I see your guys point. Especially the dead whale thing that might attract rather than prevent. Their was something posted about a whale that was breaching that landed on a Kayak. Do you guys remember?

do you think the GW would get horney after seeing, not smelling or tasting, the small KW kayak!
I just want the thing to go look somewhere else other than at me, when it gets too close.
I think I saw something on *SharkWeek about them not attacking KWs'! hence the surfboard sticker company...maybe downunder in Aus.   another GW hotspot
Hey Frank!...lets do it anyway...what's the worst that could happen?

Here's an Aussie company that makes what they believe to be a shark deterrent pattern for surfboards yaks etc. Kind of like Tote made on his yak.

Z, i can see why that would deter GWS.. it hurts my eyes just lookin at it.  Adam, I'm not sure about killers specifically... but sharks love eating whale... dead whale is even better.  They dont expend energy hunting it that way... Generally KW's kill more GWS than the other way around, but the main reason they tend to interact (from what i've seen) is when a GWS gets eyes for a KW calf.  So, GWS do go after baby KW's which is not unlike what your kayak may appear to be post paint.

I hate to be a buzzkill, hell, I like the idea too... but i dont want y'all getting chomped either.
