what im really not clear on is whats wrong with having this discussion.
seems healthy enough and atleast folks are discussing boats.
interesting thread

Nothing wrong with having the discussion.  The question "what makes a kayak?" is a good one.  But that wasn't the question.  The question was "are canoes ok for AOTY fishing?".

You can also pedal this, as well as I guess Paddle it.

I'd love to paddle that.

Peddling the pontoon thing might be fun as well ...

Nah, I bet you wouldn't get that much money for it.  Besides, taking something from somebody else and selling it is against the law. :smt003

Sorry Ben, I couldn't help myself. :smt008

It seems like anyone using a canoe or any other human powered watercraft is at a disadvantage to the kayakers. However, Imo, this is a kayak competition and all fish entered should be caught from a kayak. Furthermore, It doesnt really matter because nobody is ever gonna beat them leepins anyway.

thanks Allen, I was thinking that both of those questions are very applicable to this thread and shouldve been more clear in my post.
It may have been better to point out that canoes are starting to become more kayak like, making it tough to make the call whether someone is kayaking or paddling a canoe.
Im sure I could find a few more examples but conditions are good and I need to go load up the boats.

Yeah Terry.

I posted a great example in the 4th post of this thread.

http://www.nativewatercraft.com/overview_hybrid.cfm

Quote
Hybrid kayak designs offer the best that kayaks and canoes have to offer and seamlessly combine those attributes into a stable, versatile, easily maneuverable paddling vessel. The Ultimate™ Series has several key features that distinguish it from any other watercraft on the market, including its stable Tunnel Hull™, ultra comfortable First Class™ Seating, and easy to use Adapt-A-Trak™ accessory attachment system. Certain sizes are offered in rotomolded or composite materials and the Ultimate™ 12 is also offered in our revolutionary Tegris™ material.

What is it?

To me the Native boat looks like a modernistic canoe that borrowed a seat design from kayaks.

The NuCanoe looks like a barge-y SOT whose seats have no back support.

Wishing the AOTY committee the best of luck in sorting it out  :smt002

Guys, when is the last time we had a canoe report or an outrigger canoe report here?  Why we got to be looking for exceptions to make?  Does it really make any difference?

I would just keep it to kayaks.  We don't necessarily have to decide what exactly a kayak is.  If it is sold specifically as a "kayak", it should be ok, no matter the modifications made to it.  Many manufactures make different items, but they specifically market a certain style of boat as a kayak.  The shapes and styles may be similar to the eye, but the manufactures still call them a certain thing....at least for now... :smt003

Upon further reflection, I think we should allow all forms of human-powered vessels to compete in AOTY....add canoes, kickboats, and pontoons (w/out motor). Think of it this way: they aren't going to win and it'll be more $$ for the site!
