I am booked at the tides.  Thurs-Sun

Hey Etienne -

May have to come up on Thursday to join you for some pre-tourney fishing.  :smt001

scott

Thursday is mostly for driving since the season opens for boats I believe on Friday and I want to get an early start.  If I recall corectly I have a 7-8 hr drive.  If I get there and there is light though, I may drop some pots or huck some bait from shore.  Always happy to have you join me Scott.

I'm kinda worried about the parking. Only enough room for like 25 cars, right? Maybe we can try to yakpool to the launch and a few might have to park above too.

I'd say more like 15 cars, but the low tide is late morning progressing toward midday and the both high tides are under 5' - I think there'll be plenty of beach parking.

We can always do this too:

Abking,

I really wanted to attend and poss. lend support in the form of prizes, unfortunately I see you scheduled for the same date as my first event (F.W. Kayak Events) in Alameda. Wish I would have known about this in early January before I posted these events as I would have changed the date.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause,
Eric

Hey all, I had a thought if the weather won't cooperate for fishing.

GOLF, I noticed Shelter Cove has a course near by and thought it would be a fun activity if the weather is sketchy.
Anyone else that's going a duffer like me?
If others are interested I'll bring my clubs.

FORE! Tad

Cool!  The campground just called and I got my camp site confirmed and paid for!  Shoot, almost feel like going up Thursday now so I can fish Friday!

AK, they were asking if someone was "in charge" of the group but I didn't want to point fingers or anything.  Just mentioned that someone that knew the owner of the camp was basically organizing, but didn't give yer name.

GOLF!  Oh boy that is just what I need.  A new hobby to get hooked on and spend another thousand dollars  :smt003

My wife and daughter expressed intrest in going but she (the wife) isn't sure quite yet.  I think the family would have some fun.  My wife has a small kayak and loves paddling out in the calmer water with my daughter.  If they come it will be a full blown trailer trip.  Just myself and a tarp and the camper shell works great.

Where is everyone getting the plastic hog trough's for measuring the fish?  I see the metal ones everywhere but not the fancy NKCA and Great White sticks.  I just have ghetto lines drawn on the kayaks right now.

If it wasn't raining so hard I would be out outfitting the kayak right now!  Matt

Here is the online Nautical charts for Shelter Cove:

http://sailvector.com/1807/Shelter-Cove

It looks like there are some nice rocks outside of the cove.

This is a great site for all the West Coast nautical charts.  If only you could overlay it on Google Earth.

Hey Matt,

I'm still down for carpooling it...looks like I may be able to head over on Thursday though.

Anyone know if crabbing will be an option?

Yakaroo, cool vid, love the music choice, The Who Rock :smt004

Matt, funny you mention outfitting the yak, that's what I've been working on the past few days. Finished the "New School" battery pack for the FF, and since I paddle an OK Malibu II XL, I just finished my ghetto bar with mounts for FF, Radio and compass. I'm waiting on the weather also before I goop in the transducer and route wiring.
Been working on my crate/cart, axles and wheels are all set up. I used golf cart wheels off an old cart of mine. the 3 inch wide by 9 inch low profile. Should work OK in the sand. ( I Hope! ) Oh also, If your wife and Family can't make it maybe we could share a camp site (You, beenfishin, and myself and wife) could save us some coin?

beenfishin, I'm guessing you didn't hit Shasta on Monday like we planned, too wet and windy for me too! :smt010

Golf Anyone?

Hey Tad,
I've checked out the golf course in the past but never played it. It might be a fun way to pass the time if the weather is crap....or just to unwind after a long day of fishing. I won't bring my whole bag but I'll try to stash a few random irons, a driver, and a putter in the truck.

This site has some reliable course info http://www.sojourner2000.com/directory/golf_pub/index.htm A couple updates not mentioned on that site: carts are no longer available and it's $10/round payable in the iron kiosk thingy. Carts aren't really necessary because it is a pretty flat course so it's easy to walk. Since it's winter, the clubhouse and pub will probably be closed....unfortunately (cheapest pints in town haha).

That said, if the weather is too crappy for ME to go fishing...chances are it's too crappy to play golf. But it sure is fun to dream about a combo fishing + golf vacation! Heck, I might as well bring a surfboard, mountain bike, and a rifle! So many hobbies yet so little WAF hahaha. Hey Eric, is there a discgolf course nearby too?

Oh, and if we completely fill-up the Tides Inn but people still want to enjoy the comforts of home....checkout this vacation rental. I think its $250/night, which isn't bad if you split it between a couple people. http://www.sonic.net/~pkbuell/#C

OK, one last thing. The weather there can be very unpredictable and wild. As evidenced by this picture of a water spout that touched-down just south of the Cove. This was shot on Friday. Forwarded to me from a friend.

Yes, you can drop your crab pots around the bell bouy area (good spot) and soaked them overnight.

Hey Tad and beenfishin, I doubt my wife will be going; so sharing a camp spot sounds good.  I am going to try to head over Thurs after work.  I am guessing around 4:30-5:00PM if i get off on time and don't have any reports to finish. That way i can get an early start on Friday for some pre-fishing.  I am guessing about a 5 hour drive from Red Bluff.

I left my crab pot at my folks house in King Salmon.  I may have to swing by and grab it on my way over.  By the time I am done, my kayak will look like the grapes of wrath, headed out to the bouy.

Look forward to seeing your rigging on the Malibu Tad.  I need to work on my cart some as well.  Either shink down my current cart or buy that Wheeleez cart.  That way I can just walk it down to the water and store my cart on the kayak.

Those with some experience around Shelter Cove.  Is an anchor or drift sock recommended?  I have a large drift sock for my jet boat, but may break down and get a small one for the kayak.
