Hi Matt,

I never use a drift sock there an don't think you'll need it.  As for the anchor, you don't need it unless you plan to dive for abalone or spear fishing from the kayak.

BTW, any kayakcart will work there, since the road from the campground to the launch is paved road.

Yakhopper Eric - sorry for the date conflict, but it seems there's no holding back the rockfish and ling craze.  Sorry you can't make it.

TAD - I tend to agree with Sin Coast about the weather in that if it's too bad for fishing the golf would be pretty brutal too.  But I do definitely want to encourage you to bring your stuff and for all to be ready to enjoy any number of other activities at the Cove - just in case.   :smt002

Sin - I don't know of any disc golf course down there - too many expensive windows around, but it would be a great place for it otherwise.  We could probably disc golf the golf course, or is that way too tacky and asking for trouble?!   :smt005   Oh, and nice waterspout pic!   :smt107  I'm glad we're going in late spring instead of late winter like last time!

Alain - Thanks for covering me, Bro.  I'll call down there and let them know that I'm not in charge, only a contact on a hookup...   :smt004

Yakaroo - that's cool that you found my video.  Check out "Shelter Cove Thrill Ride" for a strong taste of Shelter Cove possibility (not family friendly due to language!).   :smt001

Matt - bring the fam, they'll have a great time.  The Hog Trough's came with last year's AOTY sign up.  I think this year's too, but I also think I remember they were limited.  Also, it's cool that you gave that link for the nautical chart.  I couldn't find that when Googling around the other day, so I went over and dug through my Dad's stuff and found that same chart of reef detail around Shelter Cove mainly south and west around the buoys.  I am actually going to laminate a bunch of them and give them out at the hookup.   :smt001

beenfishin - crabbing is open at that time, or it usually is anyway...

FindThatFish - thx   :smt001

Yeah, Matt, Sailfish's right - no cart needed.  What I opened this thread with was just some fantasy - it's not on the agenda.  Didn't seem to scare anyone off!   :smt005  And the drift sock is something I've heard is useful, but I've not used mine.  I don't recommend it out there though due to shifting winds and lively swell.

I'm checking out for a few days to hit Tahoe with the fam - I'll be continuing to plan in my head!   :smt001

I left my crab pot at my folks house in King Salmon.  I may have to swing by and grab it on my way over.  By the time I am done, my kayak will look like the grapes of wrath, headed out to the bouy.

Matt

King Salmon, sweet, I spent some time there doing enviromental work on the Air Force Base in the late 80's.  Cool spot.

I will be bringing my pots and rockfish carcasses for bait.

Wow!  I'm here in South Lake Tahoe and got an "unsecured" connection through some local wireless network.  First time in all the years coming up here with the in-laws (20+) that I've had a laptop and been able to get on the net - this is too cool!  Anyway, we're skiing the next couple days and cruising home Saturday in front of a little warmer storm that's expected.  In a different universe I'd be putting on a survival suit and yakking out past Cave Rock tomorrow to hunt big Macks...  but I'm glad to be in this universe, heading out with the fam tomorrow for Claire's first day on the slopes after last year's lesson, and Coll's first ever lesson.  Should be interesting!   :smt001

Nice chart Abking.  The link I provided is good but hard to print.  Here is a great one that you can print at home.  It has the charts all along the West Coast for free download and printing.  These booklets have great info prior to the maps.  It is our NOAA at work.  I will post this on the main board as well, as a site this good needs to be shared.  Warning the charts are large downloads 5-8 megabites.  Dial up beware!  The reduced size charts are perfect for the kayak angler!

And of course many more.  Enjoy!  Matt

BTW, here's a video showing how easy it is to land the yak at Shelter Cove:

I have a few other Cove videos on Youtube.  Go to Youtube, search for "Shelter Cove Kayak", and you'll find me - "Loletaeric".  Check 'em out.   :smt001

I would like to join if it is possible.  However, I will not be able to participate in the money between friends, as I have more of the later than the former (which I consider to be a good thing).

Do we need to declare a multi-day fishing trip with the DFG to keep two days' limit of abs or other fish? Or does that only apply to multi-days on the water?

Hi Yakaroo,

There are daily limit of 3 abs and also posession limit of 3 abs.  You can not have more than 3 abs in your possession at any time.
