Etienne's thoughts on camping / the time it takes to pack up are good observations.  Either way, we'll have a great campfire with those who are camping (Hawk+).

I honestly don't know which I'm more stoked about - the salmon fishing or the shore rock fishing!

Everyone should have that focus, because we're rolling the dice on having yakkable conditions.  PK and I have brainstormed up a few other fun activities as alternates for yakking if the WX is wild.

Gitchell Creek is 3 miles up Black Sands beach from the north end of Shelter Cove and has trout fishing, so bring an ultralight setup if you have one - there's also a reef exposed there at low tide, but it'll be getting hammered if the WX is wild anyway...  Still chances for some shorefishing for an old-growth cabezon there though too.   :smt001

Another activity that I suggested if we get blown off the water is to drive up into the King Range and hike up to King's Peak on the lightning trail - it's a cool spot and I haven't been there in 20 years.  (I'm getting deja vu - sorry if I already posted this!   :smt003)

Hi Sin Coast,
The pictures of 2006, 2007 and 2008 on the links are cool. The scene is beautiful for some of them. Where are those pictures of 2007 taken ( i attach one picture.)

Haha! Wow, that one brings back memories, johlee. Most of those pics in my shore rockfishing albums are from the Monterey, PG, Carmel, and Big Sur coastline. That one was in Carmel, and it looks like a low winter tide.
(-:
I will be trying for shore rockies up at The Cove too. The plan is to catch my limit of salmon by 10am, have lunch, then catch some nice rockfish from shore.

And I hear ya Scott. I will probably have like 6 rods with me.

Eric, PK, et. al.,  Hee hee, if it doesn't rain, this NCKA gathering might be pretty darn big.  I wonder what the locals might think about this.

Movie preview narration voice:

Invasion of the Kayak Fisher People!

Looking  forward to this. Got my friday off at work.  I aim to try rockfishing from the shore at night too. Never did that though I know some people who have been pretty successful from jettys.

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if they already know. Last year, as we had a Hookup thread posted, I received a phone call from a college buddy. He said he thought he might have found a website about kayak fishing and one of the guys sounded like me.
I was like WTF?? How did you ever stumble across that info?
He had his google setting setup to notify him every time something was posted to the internet containing the phrase "Shelter Cove." So he'd receive notification each time this phrase was posted/uploaded. He was using this setting because he has investment properties at The Cove, and was curious about info on the net.

Up until then, I thought NCKA info/boards was only accessable to members. Apparently not; anybody with a computer can access our posts. Now I try to limit my posts to preclude any specific info about people, places, and things. You know, tread lightly.
Just a little food for thought.....

Hey - just in case you didn't see the big news in my "Hookups" post...  I spoke to Tammy at Lost Coast Landing a bit ago and a 10 pounder was caught yesterday at the Bell!   :smt001 :smt001 :smt001

Ok, I have Friday off, so I'm in for sure.

I'm gonna be reading up, but I've never targeted salmon before, so I could use some pointers on a simple rig....  The banana sinker rig sounds like my style, (cheap, simple, and effective).  Can anyone suggest what weight ranges I'd need?  And can I simply run a spoon or Krok behind the weight?  I'd rather not mess with downriggers and all that.

Looking forward to it!

Eric B- if you fish that rig and catch a salmon believe me we'll be all over it. It's very simple but currents off the Humboldt coast are stronger than else where and if you go with a banana weight bring a heavy one. I use a 1lb lead ball with a 3' leader.  Using a chovie or herring gives off more scent in which a salmon can hone in on. We have coastal rivers and streams that silt out the water clarity at times.  I might attach a little piece of yarn on the Krocodile to hold some scent juice. Flashers and hoochie can improve chances as well. You're likely to see quite a variety of techniques at "Gimme shelter". If in doubt just do what Abking does.

Thanks!  In restrospect I'll probably try out a Deep Six or other divers rather than use so much lead.

I'll be camping in my truck, probably arriving early Friday afternoon.

I can bring an extra kayak if anyone needs one.

And I'm all for planning out meals.  I can bring a few racks of ribs pre smoked to throw on a grill, or side dishes, or both...  or whatever is appropriate.

Every single time I camp there's way too much food.  It would be nice to bring back nothing but fish in the cooler for once.

Well, we're getting closer, and we can start accessing some longer-range forecasts to see what's in store for us...

I don't think that rain all next week is a bad forecast, because hopefully that means by the weekend it's nice!

Regarding the swell - I don't see another big storm brewing in the Gulf of Alaska in next Monday's view, but it's too early to tell yet...

More updates to come - I'll try to control myself!   :smt003

Called to the Shelter Cove RV/Store to see if I needed to reserve a spot for the upcoming trip but she said no, just come and pick a site.  She also said that 8 salmon were caught over the weeekend.
