SC, I think me and ackyak are planning to fish for salmon+drop traps on Friday too. The river run sounds like a lot of fun. But I am on a salmon mission. And it sounds like you've got plenty of traps+rope. We can help drop+pull em if you promise to share the bounty LOL. What type of traps are they?

Ark, the prices will vary depending on which type you want. I know the Promar TR-102 traps are ChuckE approved. SCWA has some for sale, I think. They're lightweight and easy to transport on a kayak. But you have to create/make an escape ring (as required by DFG regs). It sounds like all of the Promar traps (and possibly most other MFGers) require this minor modification. I bought a commercial style crab trap (30 inch round pot w/welded doors, etc) for my dad for Xmas but it weighs 20lbs so it isn't really kayak-friendly.
I only have a star trap and a hoop net. Planning to get a real trap next week. I might just get one of the collapsible square traps that run like 30 bucks.
See ya,
PK

Ark,

I just found this crab trap link, but I've never dealt with the company:

I just read a report that crabbing has been good at the cove in 70'-120' of water (12-20 fathoms). The Salmon haven't shown in any real numbers but there haven't been to many days to try. I'd suggest to folks to bring up with them a long surf rod as well as a poke-poler for cabbies and greenling. We made good use of both last year. If the ocean doesn't cooperate but gives us some decent waves, I'll put on a surf clinic and run through the whole bit-launching, landing, surfing. We're going to have fun come hell or highwater.

Matt, thanks for the crab site. Can anyone tell me what are the pros and cons of the various Promar designed crab traps:

TR-101; TR-102; TR-301 and TR-401

I haven't crabbed before and don't really know how to pick the best one from just the pictures and brief descriptions.

I saw a better picture of the TR-401 on http://www.blueoceantackle.com/crab_traps.htm   and thought it looked like a pretty interesting trap, but don't recall anyone using this one.

I'm game for the river run! Before the latest river rise I floated from Myers' Flat to the forks and that was 8 miles. It is a good yak run. Upstream of Benbow has scary stuff.
Someone was talking about river gear and afraid of bringing too much stuff? Just bring some plugs, spoons, and drift gear. You don't even really need an anchor that badly. I like to just drag roe thru the holes. We won't have to hook fish to have fun either.
I just hope the river gets in shape for us.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

What Juan's saying is right.  The South Fork where we're planning to run is very mellow and easy.  Some day I might get an anchor, but running the river and fishing it definitely does not require one.  Otherwise we're just talking the same/less stuff than you'll need for the ocean - PFD, a rod, a camera, some food...

The ocean's shaping up so nice for tomorrow.  I may have to hit the Cove for a scouting run...   :smt004

I am just checking in once in a while as time allows  :smt009 .  The good news is I have my new boat, partially rigged, and the time off both Thurs and Fri.   :smt007 Still on  the fence about hotel or camping but expect my annual bonus expected at the end of the month will help me decide.  I like the hotel idea in terms of getting out faster on Sunday and maybe getting out one last time before hitting the road.  Camping always involves a major cleanup and packing ritual that takes more time that could be spent on the water.  Glad the crab reports are good.  There is still time for the salmon to show up.

Holy cow - a lot of responses for this hook-up . .I hope to see a ton of people there this year.  I honestly don't know which I'm more stoked about - the salmon fishing or the shore rock fishing!

I'll be coming from Orange County - is there a farthest distance traveled prize?

Fishing is cool
