OK, here is my point about catching more fish. There are some situations where tubes are superior, like hike in sierra lakes or other situations with a long portage. However, in most situations where we normally fish, the yak allows you to cover more water and reach less pressured areas which increases the liklihood of catching fish not to mention the advantage of having sonar. All that said, a really skilled angler will outfish me 90% of the time regardless of what they are fishing from. The yak just gives less skilled anglers like myself a better chance of getting lucky.  :smt003

One of the benefits of kayaking is being able to see where you're going at al times, rather than looking behind you often to make sure you're on course.

As an owner of both a kayak and a tube, I have to say float tubes are better suited for certain types of fishing. Especially when its windy!
PK

When it's windy? Not necessarily so. I float tubed the huge Indian Valley Reservoir one time, and the offshore wind came up in the afternoon. It took a long time for my group of five tubers to make it back to the launch point, possibly due to the non-aerodynamic shape of tubers. A kayaker would have made much better time.

True, true. I should've clarified. If it is windy and you're trying to stay in front of (or over) your target (be it a rocky point, or a cove, etc), it will be much easier in a tube. The only way you can maintain your position in the wind on a kayak is with an anchor...otherwise, you need to continue resetting your position by paddling. And paddling requires you to use your hands (and thusly you are not fishing...you're paddling); whereas in a tube you can use your feet to maintain your position...and keep fishing with your hands.

Kayaks are also much more difficult to manuever. If there's a boil happening 50ft behind you, you'll need to paddle around in a circle to cast in that direction. That means I have to put my rod down and paddle to get into position, and that can take up to 10 seconds (or more) before I'm making a cast. Whereas I can spin 360* in my tube (turn on a dime) and cast, without ever putting my rod down.

But you are definitely right about travelling long distances against the wind: a kayak would be MUCH better. And you will never catch me fishing from my tube in the ocean (which is where I do 85% of my fishing now).

OK....the bill has been paid...

$208.00 for two nights
$250.00 damage/cleaning deposit ( I will get this money back after they inspect the site on Sunday afternoon)
totals to $458.00

So, what I need to know right now is:

Who's staying for 2 nights and who's staying for 1 night? Please sound off so I can divide the bill properly.

I will also need the FINAL head count by Monday the 1st  - depending on the headcount, they will issue me a number of FREE parking passes. I will give the free passes to those who will stay for two nights....and if I get extra ones, I will distribute accordingly.

You can park your vehicle anywhere across the boat house - just make sure you are not parked on the "boat & trailer parking" spaces.

Those who don't get parking passes, you need to pay $6.00 per car.

Any other questions?

1 for 2 nights.  Friday night, Saturday night,   will have small gas BBQ available for all to use.

So, after you get the final tally, how or who will we pay? you when we see/meet you? Do we inform the gate where were staying? (campsite) I'm thinking each of us will be responsible for lake & boating (kayak)fees payable at the gate.

I'll be giving everyone a camp confirmation number and mention group camping at Hetch Hetchy under NCKA at the gate and they will give you parking instructions from there. I will have my VHF radio on channel 69 (no cell phone coverage in the area) - give me a holler if you encounter any problems. The last camp out I had at Hetch Hetchy, they did not charge me for a kayak launch fee - I will confirm that and will get back to you guys. THe parking fee should be the only thing you should worry about - unless I get you one for free - more on that later.

As for payment, I paid up front for everybody - we can take care of the bill later on. I'll be sending everyone an email with the breakdown of the fee.
