Dry Ice.   For those of you that haven't used it before,  or are not familiar with it, "Let me tell something to you"    Anything frozen you put into cooler with dry ice, will remain ROCK solid frozen!  learned this the hard way jeep camping a few decades ago.  Also keep the dry ice wrapped in whatever the store has it in, or wrap it with paper to insulate it from the cooler. Paper bags will work. It will freeze the cooler plastic it's in contact with and possibly crack it!
Oh, never handle the ice bare handed!  You'll pay for it with a freeze burn.
Then, theres always little chunks in your drinks to make them fog!

Dry ice is great for bringing sushi on a camping trip. Even in a desert.

Troy, how do you determine how much dry ice works for a cooler?

Compa, I believe it is check in by 2 pm and check out by noon, which I assume the campground has to be completely clean before noon on Sunday.

Don't do this either

Hojoman, it's been many years since I've purchased dryice, Back then it was sold by the pound,  The very first time I got some I got a 10 or 15lb (maybe smaller) block of the stuff,  About the same size of block ice.  WAY to much,  I remember busting that chunk of dry ice up and using around half of it for the upcoming trip. The cooler I had then was a simple Coleman 54qt.
The second time I got some dry ice, (different place) it was in sheets, still sold by pound I think, but the sheets were easier to work with,  I seem to remember them being little over a foot long by maybe 2.5" thick?  Anyhow these fit the cooler better and by the end of the 4 day trip I had a small maybe 3" oval overall size of the ice left.
As far as how much  to use?  I really can't say.  That last sheet I used lasted 4 days, but I also kept the cooler closed up tight the whole time
Glacier Bay Ice in Fremont is where I got it back then, not sure if there still in Fremont, but I see their trucks on the roads a lot!  Call them, they would be able to answere your question.

Mooch, I'll be heading to the lake after work on Friday, (leaving around 3:30pm from Montague & First st.) I suspect I won't have any issues with check in? (other than traffic over the darn hill on 680.)

no issues with check in - just say you are with NCKA and have the group campsite at Hetch Hetchy

Hey Mooch

My WAF just got better after telling her I'd rather go fishing than hang out with a bunch of firemen at Fort Mason for Oktoberfest next week.  :smt002  So I'm swinging by on Friday the 12th with a few pounds of marinated tritip steaks.  Also, I got you a long sleeve Xl Station 2 shirt to trade for a large BAM III shirt.  For anyone else who's interested in a SFFD "Chinatown" T-shirt, just send me a PM and I'll take care of you :smt001

Looks like there's a few distributors in 408 that sell dry ice.  Although not sure if they do direct sales, as opposed to commercial quantities only.  find a place in your neighborhood

Do they sell regular ice at the little tackle shop there? You could just buy another bag on Sunday or something.
The only time I ever bought/used dry ice, it was for a 8 day camping trip in a remote part of the E. Sierra. Unfortunately, the dry ice exploded a few beers; it was that cold. So remember to keep the dry ice away from the beer! Or soda.
