As it seems that poaching pots is already a significant problem again this year i have an idea of doing a poach set up. Maybe some others would be game. Place a number of pots in HMB close enough to beach (ie near Miramar where road is on water) so can see well enough from shore with binoculars, then spend the better part of weekend hanging out and keeping an eye on things. Maybe I can get another member or two to participate and take turns.....as well as pull our own pots, do some bbq and beer drinking.
Anyone up for poach patrol? Any other ideas?

I like the idea, but it begs the question - what will the poach-patrol do when they see active poaching from the beach through binoculars?  Recording them in the act would be good evidence, but not sure you could prove too much from that far away.  I like the boobie-crab-trap someone considered last year... something that will eject blue dye and confetti all over the person that pulls the trap and doesnt know how to deactivate it.  At least in that case, there are consequences.

I like the concept of  booby trap  but concerned about safety, legality, etc.

My thought is report boat/numbers to DFG AND Confront at boat ramp!!! take photos etc.

At least if we knew boat ID etc we could start spreading the word to watch for them!

Hey Nolan, you fishing this weekend? Sunday looks pretty good.

As a LEO, I would consult DFG about what you can legally do in these kinds of situations.

Poach patrol. What can you do? Confront them? Maybe it gets out of hand and things go sideways and an assault happens. Or one crashes into another and now there is damage to boats.

A simple assault could bar you from possessing a firearm for ten years. our god given right to bare arms and you could lose it over a he said/ he said scenario. Think about it. Kind of dumb we have to think this far but this is California. The rules are in favor of the defendants and not the good people.

Also calling DFG to report is a good idea but they can be delayed or never show up. You can hope they will do follow up but then again your evidence
Disappears. They do play by different rules though so they can prosecute without certain types of evidence.

I like the involvement in this forum. Pretty cool. You guys keep it up.

Has DFG ever just waited and watched for people pulling pots, then pull up to people pulling said pots, then confirm that their GO ID matches the GO ID on pulled pots buoys?

lol

No.

That's not what the GOID on the buoy is for.  It's to identify you in case of a marine mammal entanglement.  They lied about the enforcement of poaching part.

Yeah I thought the reason for the GO ID was to allow DFG to monitor but have never seen them out there. They generally hang at the ramp and watch for count and size.

....i own guns.....but "God given Right" WTF

As a mature adult I can confront someone without a weapon or violence. Doing so at the boat ramp in a public area with people and witnesses around NOT on the water would definitely be a safer more appropriate move.

Just thinking that identifying poachers and their vessels might be a bit of a deterrent .... not looking for violent conflicts but I'm also not too much of a whimp to confront somebody appropriately when they are doing wrong.

All-

This is great to fantasize about but it's a terrible idea and no good can come from it.  They are crab.  You're gonna get poached.  It's part of the game.  Maybe getting it on camera and blasting their faces here and on whatever local facebook pages there are would be appropriate, but that's it.  Never, ever confront them.  Don't engage in property damage, or other acts of petty/righteous revenge.

Someone should invent a buoy that inflates when it receives a special sonar code. What you can do with it is drop a trap without a line. How cool? Then when you send the code, the buoy inflates and brings up the trap.

Those already exist.  They are called acoustic release buoys.  They are prohibitively expensive.

I think we took my comment a little to far. It was a form of speech. I think I’d rather just not even post on here anymore or better yet give advice.

Maybe this forum is a little too sensitive.  Sorry if I offended any of you guys or gals over trying to give solid advice.
