I think we took my comment a little to far. It was a form of speech. I think I’d rather just not even post on here anymore or better yet give advice.

Maybe this forum is a little too sensitive.  Sorry if I offended any of you guys or gals over trying to give solid advice.

I wouldnt worry too much about it.  Just like all speech, some like it, some dont.  No biggie.  Peeps just dont like having their pots poached.  When I pull up an empty pot after an overnight soak and all of my bait is gone, yet no crab, I get angry, but mostly at myself for fucking something up like propping it upside down on the ocean floor, or on a rock/slope where a door is hanging wide open for safe in/out crab traffic.  I am a more "benefit of the doubt" kind of guy, but probably a bit naive as well.  Better than being paranoid about POS poachers, imo.

I love the idea of a beat down on a poacher. I associate poachers with bullies and there’s only one way to deal with a bully. It’s a great fantasy, but not realistic in this world we live in.

Years ago, while quail hunting in El Cento, we passed a group a guys drinking beer and shooting dove from a bridge and dropping them into the river. I used my trusty flip phone to call it into 911 and reported it though the 911 operator to the DFG. We passed back by the spot about an hour later to a lot of cops and DFG trucks. I doubt we were the only ones who called, but I know one instance where reporting a poacher worked.

I like your thoughts, but I would not do it. I have the CalTIP app and will report a poacher when I see one and let the guys with the guns and badges follow up. It may not work, but it’s better than finding myself dealing with a lunatic who pulls a gun or a knife and puts a hole in a spot where one should not be.

Yeah I thought the reason for the GO ID was to allow DFG to monitor but have never seen them out there. They generally hang at the ramp and watch for count and size.

....i own guns.....but "God given Right" WTF

As a mature adult I can confront someone without a weapon or violence. Doing so at the boat ramp in a public area with people and witnesses around NOT on the water would definitely be a safer more appropriate move.

Just thinking that identifying poachers and their vessels might be a bit of a deterrent .... not looking for violent conflicts but I'm also not too much of a whimp to confront somebody appropriately when they are doing wrong.
You definitely read into my words about god given right. Also, No one said confront with a weapon. That is downright stupid to do unless it is life threatening.

Obviously you did not read my post. I was clear about what I posted. I will be sure never to post again due to the misinterpretation of what I wrote.

Keep posting.  I love to hear from all the Law Enforcement and Military in our community.  Thank you for your service.  There are sensitive people here and I do wish people would read and not read into a persons post.  I'm prolly guilty as well but hey, that's fishing'...be well...hope you get that kayak and get on da wattah! :smt006

You’re paraphrasing the US Declaration of Independence.

“ Endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights”

Never a need to apologize for that and I don’t read anything into it, I take it at face value.

@CQ -
As a likely Dab-4-life, listen to the Lions and post what you feel you should.  The community understands and heeds good advice, but there are plenty of smarties who love to quibble.

I liked your post, and Lord knows I have walked away from plenty...(because I would rather go hunting!!!)

Love the game, hate the players.

Thanks for the advice. Just frustrating for sure how people misread a post. Simple advice twisted up.

Someone should invent a buoy that inflates when it receives a special sonar code. What you can do with it is drop a trap without a line. How cool? Then when you send the code, the buoy inflates and brings up the trap.

Those already exist.  They are called acoustic release buoys.  They are prohibitively expensive.

Working on it- Its how my grandfather dropped and collected experimental devices at Scripps institute years ago.  He used different tech, time released links that would dissolve consistently under water.  A lifesaver candy was his first proof of concept release..  Just an idea..

I called a game warden to ask about the requirements of the float attached to the trap, as the regulations require one but don't necessarily define where it needs to be (above or below the waterline).. waiting for a call back on that one lol

Thanks. That’s right. I didn’t check in detail but looks like $1000 upwards and cumbersome. I was thinking something much more compact.

I have to agree that you should never confront someone about this sort of thing. It can lead to escalation and god only knows who you are confronting or their mindset. Call law enforcement. If they show up in a timely fashion, great. If not, it’s just a couple crabs.

Some years back i recall reading about a dfg or coast guard sting where they put out traps containing dye marked crabs. Back at the harbor they checked catches with a uv light and nsbbed some folks. Mighta been hmb or sc.
