To all of you yakers hearing me getting sea sick on channel 69  :smt044

I’ve been trying to get the Scopolamine patches and wanted to share that I called Kaiser and told them that my primary physician was on vacation, and I needed to get the patches. They put me on hold for the advice nurse, who asked me a few questions and approved the prescription. The advice nurse said that the on-call doctor would review the approval and if I didn’t hear from them in the next hour or two, then I can go to the pharmacy to pick up the patches.

Also good to know that those patches are sold in Canada under a brand called Transderm-V at the Costco pharmacy. I have lots of friends there who can get it for me for CAD $11, which is like US$8 for a pack of 2 patches.

I don’t know how effective those patches would be but I can tell you that Amazon sells another type of herbal patch called MQ if I’m wrong. I’ve tried those and they didn’t work.

Sounds like you may have no experience with the Scopolamine patches? If that's true I highly recommend that you pick a day where you have nothing planned, then put them on the night before and see how they affect you the next day.  They are the only drug that I have ever used where I have had a significant side effect. Dry mouth and significantly blurred vision, for several hours with a little dizzyness thrown in.  I would use them again on a big boat, but don't think I'd use them for yaking. Additionally I know people who had zero side affects and people who were basically put out of commission for a couple days.

Just a long winded word of caution from personal experience.

Last year I requested a prescription of Transderm patches from my Kaiser doctor.  I think I paid $20 for 10 patches and they last 3 days per application.  Works for me because without them, I usually get seasick.

Good advice from Dale, I have a couple friends the patch causes side effects on them.

Wow! Good to know. I heard about the side effects but it’s much more real when you hear about other people having them. It’s a very good advice to try them “dry” (no pun intended) and then OTW.

Borrow some fractal vids from the library...put on the Doors or your favorite psychedelic rock and let it flow bro...I even think there are enthusiasts who meet and focus or unfocus on using said drug profile to escape the ills of this life...personally I take up to a 3/4 dose of costco meclizine to ride the fine line of sea sickness and antihistimine type hateful feeling... :smt006

The Scopolamine patches are really potent. I'm not sure which is worse, getting sea sick, or having the side effects of the Scoplamine patch. You might want to start with half a patch.
The pill form was great, but had been discontinued for years. Some people mentioned they went to a Compound Pharmacy and had them make the pills. But some Ncka member recommended Kwells from Australia. Tried it and love it. To me it acts just like the Scopolamine pills with very mild dry mouth for a few hours. Not sleepy. You might want to give it a shot.

Good to hear.  I bought some Kwells on Ebay.  Haven't tried em yet but I'll report back in the next week or two when I actually get out in the ocean.

Meclizine 25 mg dosed 18 hours the day before, and 2-3 hours 25 mg again before hitting the water. At least for me and a lot of people, lot less drowsiness than dramamine, less anti-cholinergic side effects than scopolamine. One of the (many) reasons oral scopolamine not available here is too many side effects, especially stomach, and it was used as a date rape drug in South America a while back (memory loss at high doses).
Sea bands might work, I've been skeptical about the research. Still on the fence about it.

FDA actually recommends bananas as part of BRAT diet for sea sickness, but I'm gunna veto that one

Any thing else is not "officially" recommended.

Many fishermen spend their lives chasing fish, only to realize that it was themselves that they were chasing.

The "Salty" in my handle refers to my attitude, not the waters I fish

If the scopolamine is a bit much for you (re: some of the side effect stories on this page), you can try taking a dose or half a dose of diphenhydramine (Benadryl; yes, the allergy medication).  It's the same class of medication and works the same way, it just won't last as long.

+1 on meclizene!  https://bonine.com/

I get “pray for death” seasick and this has worked great for me. Key is taking the night before and then right before getting on/in the boat.
