So:
As I noted in my earlier post, the Scopolamine I applied on Thursday night had some nasty side effects that subsided by Saturday. On Saturday I had a good lunch and an early dinner at 4:30pm. At 5pm I took one pill of Dramamine (the less drowsy version- the one with Meclizine) and didn’t eat anything until I got back from fishing the following day. I didn’t feel dizzy or drowsy. I didn’t drink anything but water. When I was on the water I didn’t drink or eat anything. I had a great time. Wind waves were high, some 3-4ft. Wind was strong too. But swell not so much. Maybe 4ft at 8 seconds.
I was able to retie my line after it got snagged, which took some time and normally would cause me to get nauseous, but not this time. In general I would handle things in the kayak without trying too hard to look at the horizon occasionally, and I was fine. When I got to shore I felt great. Not depleted like I usually do when I get sea sick.
Hopefully this “system” will work in the future.

Boom!  That's a victory.  The horizon is where you're supposed to look if you're losing it right?  If you try to focus on a steady object like land, or a knot, or a crab pot, your body reacts as if it's not moving when it actually is swaying.  You may feel a little off tomorrow.  I would like to know.  Sometimes all that movement goes somewhere if it's masked... :smt006

Glad you found something that worked! I usually take a maclizine when I go to bed, and then 1/2 dimenhydrinate (chewable Dramamine) when I arrive then the other 1/2 maybe 4hrs later if I feel like I need it. It keeps me feeling decent and not drowsy all day. I get super motion sick if I don’t take anything. Regular Dramamine does nothing and makes me super drowsy. Scopolamine works, but leaves me absolutely exhausted at the end of the day and into the next day.

Its good to find something that works for sure.

I dont have any lock with the OTC pills at all, but maybe I'm not building it up in my system enough in advance, I dont know.
The patches seem to work but I also have a little fine motor issues with them and instead of feeling badly nauseous OTW I just feel slightly nauseous the entire time I have them on. Its cheap through Kaiser for the patches (on my plan at least), 4 patches for $5.

I think the real key is time of exposure, and I spend so little time on larger boats my brain-ear connection does not knowwhat to do there. in the kayak I'm good until things get tall and mixed 5'+ and crossing, then its all over for my stomach. Although I have not tested the patches in these conditions yet.

I'm a firm believer in the 0.4 mg scopolamine pills. (Formerly known as Scopace, now discontinued.) I always take one before boating. Kayaking makes me less queasy but I'll keep a pill in a baggie just in case I feel the need or if I know conditions are lumpy. When fishing on an overnight boat I'll definitely use a patch, despite the side effects. I've never had any side effects with the pill.

I think any compounding pharmacy can sell the 0.4 mg pills with a doctor's prescription. I've had good luck ordering from Steven's Pharmacy in Costa Mesa. http://scopolamine.mhdzn.net (714-884-3574.) They will take a credit card over the phone and ship..... Not affiliated, just putting it out there.

The tip regarding Kwells is interesting, but I've had bad luck ordering stuff from Australia.

I paid $150 for 30 pills in May, so $5/pill. Not cheap but worth it.

I’m really thankful to be part of this community and get all the tips and encouragement from everyone. Thanks!
Next time I’ll be on the water I’m expecting 4-6ft swell at 10 seconds. I’ll try the same “no food” strategy with Dramamine after dinner. Let’s see if it’s consistent. Will report here.
I also took the advice to get Kwells on eBay. Also got Bonine and regular Dramamine. I won’t experiment with them unless my Dramamine system stops working.
One more thing I want to say to those who are in the same boat like me (no pun intended), namely, relatively at the start of your ocean kayak fishing career, is don’t despair. And take time off to recoup. And don’t give up.

Final update:
This weekend repeated the Dramamine drill from last time:
Ate dinner (this time finished at 7pm instead of 5pm, and was heavier too) and had one Dramamine pill right after it. Didn’t put anything into my mouth until I got back from fishing the following day, except for water that I drank in the evening. Went to bed around 9:30pm. Woke up 4:30am. Got to the beach.
Swell 3-5ft, 2-4ft wind waves - pretty bumpy, caught lots of fish and got snagged many times so I definitely looked at the gear enough to get sea sick. But I didn’t! I was really good.
It’s the second time this Dramamine drill is working for me.
Here is what didn’t work in the past:
- taking Dramamine the morning of
- taking one Dramamine before bed and one in the morning
- drinking coffee and eating toast with any of the above
- Scopolamine patch (bad side effects)
- ginger chews
- MQ herbal patches from Amazon

Happy for you. You've obviously found what works for you. That's the key.

I wouldn't worry too much about what you eat or drink. The problem is not in your stomach. It's about the fluid sloshing around in your inner ear.

Nice catch! Your son is digging it.

Update on relief band electric shocking wrist watch like nausa reducer. I used setting 2 or 3. It worked shockingly well! I am buying 2 more for people I go out with. No sleepiness or side effects like I get from the pills. I usually barf my guts out and never eat on power boats in Ocean out of Shelter Cove last 5 days Zero Nausa no puking and ate a lot of food on the water. Fish score was 2 salmon 10 lbs lots of rockfish 2 lings. Salmon were mooching in 55 ft of water on the bottom. Looked to me like the kayaks out there were outfishing the powerboats for salmon.

The electric relief band definitely works. I used to keep a few on my boat for guests. It's just not very handy for kayaking since they tend to stop working after they get wet.

If i may, I can add my two cents in about compounding scopolomine especially from Steven's Pharmacy. I've ordered twice from this pharmacy for my long range trips out of San Diego. The first time, the waters in Mexico were like a lake the entire time so I didn't have to take the compounded capsules at that time. I did however take them on a trip that I took a few years later. I had re-ordered from Steven's Pharmacy since the old pills were expired. I can tell you that after taking those pills, I have never felt blockages and constipation as worse as I did at that time. That experience however may be my own and it may differ from people to people, but I do know that I will never order from that pharmacy again. Also I think that pharmacy has changed its name since the website takes you some place else.

I have been using Kwells lately. I've never had any issues ordering over ebay. Kwells is also available from the UK I believe as well. It's the same drug as scopace.
