My takeaway is SIP only works if everyone complies (90%)

Also that WE ALL GET IT EVENTUALLY!  Whether it is now or in 2 months.

Listening to the FD scanner there’s a ton of calls (about 5-10 an hour) for people who can’t breathe, choking, and having chest pains.  Yikes!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the SIP so we don't all get it eventually.  If we all avoid contact and restrict ourselves to only essential activities while keeping 6 feet apart and washing our hands, etc. the SIP will cause those that have it to go through the process of the illness and are hopefully able to survive.  Once a month or so has passed of SIP, we can come out and resume our lives as normal.

I do get your point that not every person in every home/city/county/state/country are following a SIP order and therefore the virus will be around for longer than we as individuals want to realize.  Even if the virus goes dormant during the warmer months, the medical experts believe that it will still come back in the fall.  Hopefully by then a proper vaccine will be available in enough quantities that  we can all get one.

Just as many people are gonna get this virus either way.  The idea behind SIP is to extend the length so there isn't a spike that overloads the medical system we have.  Once the peak has crested, things will lighten up and the virus will run it's course.  Think of it was a wave; the swell and the duration.  Waves 10 seconds apart, but less height has more energy than a wave that peaks higher but is shorter in duration.  I suppose those who stay SIP for as long as there is any chance at all of getting this virus won't get it, but only if they are very careful of what they bring into the home.  Mail, groceries, anything touched by anyone else all needs to be sanitized for that to work.

My biggest fear is that I'll do something to injure myself that requires emergency room care and I'm in the thick of it as far as the most cases concerned.  So not only stay isolated, don't do anything that would risk injury resulting in ER care.

Tough call.  Many factors can go into the decision.  If I were to go to the Shelter Cove salmon opener if it still happens, this comes to mind.  1. Bring everything you need so as to stop stop anywhere.  2.  Kayaks are one man operations and can easily keep the social distancing.  3. I wont be traveling out of my county.
Personally, I think our situation here up north is different than the bay area.  We dont have big masses of people and if the SIP orders say to stay within your county then I dont see any harm in launching a kayak, fishing, then going home.  If your not having contact with people and your not stopping anywhere besides the side of the road or a beach then your not risking anything.  I guess there is the case if you have an emergency on the water, but that is always a chance and the emergency.  I'm playing it day by day right now and I'll come to my decision on open day.  I will however get some perch action in soon at King Salmon which is at the bottom of the hill where I live.

I see no problem with fishing as long as one follows the steps other have already mentioned.

The question is whether it's OK to travel outside of your local area for recreational fishing.  Or any recreation.

Offering opinions doesn't seem like a safe activity anymore.  So, I won't do that.

The web link for on this acceptable activities for Sonoma County indicates that "Go for a drive" is considered safe.

My dad lives in West Sonoma County. The other day he went for a scenic out near Armstrong Woods just to get out of the house for a bit. Tried to take a back road and got stopped by a ranger with lights flashing. No ticket, but the ranger just said “Go home. Shelter in place.”

That's a ton of info, really well presented but could probably fill an 4 hr lecture.

My takeaways'

It all helps,

But is it OK to travel for fishing?

As of yesterday there's a newly clarified SIP order in Humboldt.  Here's a synopsis from an email I got:

The order directs all businesses and governmental agencies to cease non-essential operations at physical locations in the county and prohibits all non-essential gatherings of any number of individuals. The order also demands the cessation of all non-essential travel and places limits on properties available for rent.

My eye goes right to these points:
- PROHIBITS ALL NON-ESSENTIAL GATHERINGS OF ANY NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS
- DEMANDS THE CESSATION OF ALL NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL

How is it essential to travel for fishing?

Let's say you have it and don't know it.  Let's say you rapidly come down with a fever, cough and trouble breathing - this is how it goes for some who do fall ill with the virus.  Let's say you are basically down and out while on the road or AT the Cove.  How do you justify that you went down there for recreation during a worldwide emergency?

Part of me wants to fish the Cove on the opener so badly.  It's for my mental health, and my family will eat the fish...

Can I take care of my mental health and physical exercise needs without traveling?  Absolutely.  Does my family have other food to eat?  Absolutely.

So how can I justify traveling to a remote community for my own pleasure at this time?  I cannot.

I don't want to go to the Cove.  I need to stay home.  I wish to do the right thing and to help others do the right thing.

If this makes you mad then ask yourself the same questions.

Lashing out at me only means you're struggling with it yourself, and the suggestion to just go do what you want and keep it secret means you're even more selfish than just going against the advice of others and the directives of authorities.

This is a WORLDWIDE CATASTROPHE - not your next opportunity for glory.

I'm sorry you feel that I'm lashing out at others, Dustin.  I guess a worldwide catastrophe has brought out this sense of urgency in me when I see that a bunch of people think that recreational fishing is more important than following an unprecedented SIP order that is our best chance of coming out of this with more positive outcomes.

Sorry, I just used "lashing out" because it is the verbiage that you used in your post. How about aggressively conveying your point?

To echo Crash's statements - you asked for opinions and even started a poll, but you've made it obvious that what you're really looking for is for people to agree with you.

A huge part of this problem is the mixed statements that were sent out by the counties. The first SIP order e-mails were encouraging people to keep going out and enjoying the parks and recreation.

I agree - I was one who went diving and kept my distance, but it didn't feel right because I knew others would want to do so and would travel to other communities to do it.

Sorry for being upset and for upsetting others.

We've got to help each other comply with what everyone's supposed to be doing, and we can't hold ourselves to a different standard just because we're good at keeping our distance.

I care a lot about this community - that's where my urgency comes from.  Again, I apologize for being alarmist about this - I will try to stay on an even keel while continuing to encourage everyone to help each other to find the best priority for all.

Thank you, Dustin - I appreciate your willingness to bring a minor yet well deserved bitch-slap down on me!   :smt008
