The issue is that Eric did not Shelter in Place (unless he has ocean front property; which he might, then it would be ok).

No, he didn't shelter in place.  Did he travel outside his local area, as well?  Maybe... maybe not.  While Shelter cove isn't mileage local to him, I'd consider him local there since he knows it like the back of his hand.
Why is one person's interpretation more absolute and overrides someone elses?

If you feel like I've come down hard on you then I apologize.  To say maybe I did and maybe I didn't go outside my local area isn't cool with me - I've been clear about what I'm talking about - repeating over and over on this thread that the question is about traveling outside your local area.  Now, as of yesterday, we have clarified SIP guidelines here - "Demanding cessation of all non-essential travel" - I've already been doing that 10 days, and I will keep trying to get the word out to others who don't know or don't care.

I know you don't mean to direct it specifically to anyone and I understand the "big picture" everyone keeps talking about.  But this topic seemed to draw a line in the sand, with many jumping to agree with you with their own strong sense of judgement.  I don't believe it has to be this or that.  There is a narrow range of safety in the SIP guideline where we can still enjoy outdoor recreation, to a limit, but there is a range.  I don't want to appear as someone on the lower end of the spectrum range, testing the edge to justify my "essential" reasons to go fishing and kayaking.  As the SIP ordinance stands throughout most of California, its a day by day risk assessment just to step outside the house to walk my dog or push my kid around the block.  We all live in different circumstances and must make risks depending on our situations.  Telling me to "stay the fuck home" 24/7 with a 2-year and a pregnant wife doesn't help convince me to do just that.  I'm still human.  I may not choose to go kayaking, but I do go on drives to clear my head and catch up on some sleep in my truck.

As for saying "Did he travel outside his local area, as well?  Maybe... maybe not", I was responding to DavidMel, and did want to answer that for you.  Only you know if you left your local area or not.  For some its a few square miles, for others, could be an hour radius.

I know you mean well and thank you for giving a shit.  For those who don't care and don't bother to even read the guidelines, then I'll let Darwin give you a pep talk.

We all have to make choices that are for our own best welfare and to keep our families and friends safe.  Trust me I know.  My wife is immune compromised and I am scared for her.   Maybe that is why I come across with more of a line in the sand attitude.

I was just joking around about the staythefuckhome thing.  Hope you didn't take it too serious.  I'm not on anyone's side on this, I'm a strong believer that each person has the right to do what they want.  I think we've all been provided enough information to make a decision.  I don't believe anyone has right to force their opinions onto another.

I totally saw that sarcasm, so I wasn’t referring to you.

But I have seen other posts outside these topics that were more direct and contained less sarcasm.  I personally received one private message asking what my problem was and that I should stay indoors and not risk my families safety.  Maybe I am also sensitive because more than just the risk of sickness, my family has had racial slurs yelled at them since this all started.  In some ways, I’m more afraid of other humans doing physical harm to my family than spreading the virus.  But that’s off topic and for another thread.

Actually was looking for the halibut report and saw this and went back over it to find my vote.....did you guys know there is a parallel thread with the work "fishing" replaced by the word "recreation"? That thread is way more chill I believe because most of us are passionate about fishing.

After reading through this I feel like if I did go fishing in my local area I wouldn't want to post about it.

I see no problem with fishing as long as one follows the steps other have already mentioned.

The question is whether it's OK to travel outside of your local area for recreational fishing.  Or any recreation.

Offering opinions doesn't seem like a safe activity anymore.  So, I won't do that.

The web link for on this acceptable activities for Sonoma County indicates that "Go for a drive" is considered safe.

My dad lives in West Sonoma County. The other day he went for a scenic out near Armstrong Woods just to get out of the house for a bit. Tried to take a back road and got stopped by a ranger with lights flashing. No ticket, but the ranger just said “Go home. Shelter in place.”

It's kind of funny how many people don't feel as though the park closures apply to them. I saw a bunch of vehicles parked out in front of Olompali today and folks just strolling right in.

And to answer the question of the post title; No, I don't think it's okay to travel for fishing. I think it's selfish. I believe we should wait this one out until the coast is clear.
I work in a company that deals primarily in public works jobs, so I am still working. I go to work, stay the hell away from others, then go home and walk the neighborhood. I've been doing all the shopping for essentials and asking Sarah to stay home. I don't think she's left the house in a good couple weeks.
I've been mulling over the idea of just not going to work for a few weeks to minimize exposure, but I don't know that there'd be work to go back to. I'm nervous either way.

Thanks for the reminder!

Even at an out of home job where people are relatively isolated I feel there is more risk of spreading this virus than when kayak fishing.

Marin county just posted this. As of 4/1 motorized travel is not allowed for recreation. “Driving to access parks or open spaces is prohibited.” Unless you can walk or ride your bike to your fishing spot then you’re risking a ticket/imprisonment!

Was just trying to figure if I could make a cart out of one of those kid trailers, could probably make it to Emeryville!

But seriously not going to Marin or making a cart.

I changed my vote. I feel that as long as you're not putting excess stress on our medical support you are doing yourself a favor getting out and enjoying the fresh air. That being said, close to home trips without having to refuel at the gas pump, buy extra gear, etc. make the most sense. I'm pretty discouraged by people not respecting (or completely ignoring) the shelter in place protocol... Not the time. We are extremely lucky to live during the modern era with all these great comfort recreational opportunities. Suffer a little. It isn't bad! Think about the folks that had to go fight in WWI during the Spanish flu. This shite is a cakewalk.
