Hi guys.... Just like all the other tourneys, all proceeds beyond the cost of the event (hot dogs, sand sodas?) will go to the MBSTP.

I know the management is strategizing towards renting klayaks for those who want to fish.  first steps in that process for them have been the fishing clinics that I run, which have been pretty successful there for the past few years.

Internally, I'm confident in stating that the busisness and the managemenet totally suport kayak fishing.  they carry fishing kayaks and accessories, have the clinics, sponsoring the derby, and likely soon will be renting.

Tara tells me they make any major decisions in the off-season, so wintertime would be the time they'd make it.  they maintain a sometimes delicate balance with the sanctuary in which most of their bread and butter tours  occur.

Love what kevin contributed, thanks.  We can help demopnstrate anglers are a vital aspect of the kayak business.

If you are planning on attending, pleae sign up soon, so we can get a better count for hot dogs and such.....LOL

signs ups will be accepted on the "day of," but better to get your spot nailed early.

Thanks

Allen

I am attending in the hopes of building a better image with MBK for kayak fishing.  So that they will not feel that they need to choose between one population or the other for customers.  Sustainable, well managed fisheries are as important to a good sea shore community as looky-loo tourism.....IMO.  It will be great if we can convince them that we are as cool a segment as the otter tour folks.
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,

Time to chime in.
I like to fish. I like to hang with cool people. I like to jokingly talk smack.
That is what tournaments are for me.
I do like that there is a prize for the lucky person to get the big fish that day, but I would have just as much fun with the same crowd if there was no prize at all and it would noy sway my decision to participate or not..
As for the charity part of it; that is not why I participate. It would be a LOT easier for me to sit at home and just write a check to whatever charity the tournament is supporting and not have to pack, drive at least 4 hours ( one way ), pay for gas, pay for some kind of lodging, drive home and wash all my gear.
The charity will only determine if I DON'T go rather than if I do go. I certainly would not attend one who supports PETA.
If all the proceeds went to the event planner that would be fine with me too, just as long as they were up front with it. It is definitely an $-load of work. Why not be compensated for it?

The Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project
www.mbstp.org

I know this is their website URL but whenever I type it into my browser at work, it is blocked, and says "blocked due to pornography" LOL! Whats up with that?! Maybe porn for conservation-minded folks like me...

I signed up yesterday. And it is confirmed...First Prize IS an Ocean Kayaks Trident!!!
Looking forward to some friendly competition. And, of course, winning a new yak!

SCAllen,

Tournament Rules, are all Kayaks required to launch from the beach at MBK or will anglers be allowed to launch at other locations around the bay? I've heard both ways so I would like that clarified. Thanks - Ben

Launch and land at MBK....pretty standard for tourneys these days.  Everyone has to paddle from the same start point.  this has a tendency to level the playing field.  Luck becomes a bit more of a factor.

We've had previous tourneys that allow fishing anywhere as long as one returns by weigh in time, and I like that setup, but for this first one at MBK, it's the "Gran prix start," like  with the kayak connection and the HMB tourneys.

We are getting close now to the date, and I will post a new thread sometime next week with further details .  Please try to pre-register so we can save time on the morning of the tourney.

Thanks

Allen

Can speared fish be weighed in or is it hook and line only? I couldn't see it anywhere in the info online.

Kayak FISHING contast....not kayak SHOOTING contest.  May not be specified in text, but that is the intent and understanding.
