Hey Marmite...

How about turning the Kayak vertical, and then arranging the NorCalKayakAnglers and NCKA.org just as in this logo, but basically replace the skull and cross bones with the kayak and crossed rod and paddle, with the kayak and stuff set in the background, behind the words.

I'd do it if I could, but I don't have the skill or time to do it.

How about turning the Kayak vertical

Well, I could do that.  But really, the only reason that I decided to try one more design was because I was trying to think of a way that the "NCKA" could be incorporated in the body of the design or conform to the design in such a way that they do not have to be "tagged on" outside the logo.  I thought this would produce a "cleaner" design. So turning the kayak vertically would kind of defeat the purpose.  It would force the letters outside the design again, which is what all the other designs are pretty much compelled to do.

As for the sans-serif font, Big J, that could certainly be eaily changed, but I sketched this on my work laptop and it didn't have all the fonts available.

Anyway, I'm off to a family wedding in Hawaii and will see what you have all come up with when I return next Wednesday.

Erik,

Don't worry about it.  The only reason I'm even close to upset is that I just spent some time trying to do the exact same thing.   :smt005  I can send you the PSD file if you're using photoshop, but it's rather large.  I also prefer to save these designs as a GIF file with a transparent background that way the background will be what ever color the logo is placed on.

Thought I'd just put these up for fun.  Obviously not for use as a logo but it interesting what the software programs can do...

Sorry Sky, but without even finishing reading your post, I feel like I need to point out that any design can be redrawn by a skilled person using any program available.  They may not be able to be directly converted but it certainly seems like some one with the appropriate program and skill could reproduce one from scratch as most are not that complex.

I like your design Marmite.

I have worked with graphic designers - printers and photographers for 20 + years.

I have a lot of experience in these three areas.

Erik, Put a kayak in the lings mouth and I think that should say it all or a kayaker(s) in the background, small but ovious, reeling in the big lingcod. Oh and a little wake around the Kayak would be a nice touch (sleigh ride :}) Frank

Thought I'd search out some of the other kayak angler logos that are out there to see what works, what doesn't, what's already been done to death, etc...

At risk of looking like SoCal kayak angler with sponsors or something..here are a bunch of logos.. some seem to be embedded in banners, but you can still see the logo.

NOTE: These are not submissions!

Brian... thanks for finding and posting those logos.  It's good to see and compare with what's already out there.
Some personal comments....

- Already too many sillohuettes of kayak fishermen in logos.  Of those above the only one I thought was cool was .  Most were "fuddy-duddy" as my wife would say.  She's in a design field and feels we should be aiming for something edgy.  I agree with her for once. :smt002

- This TKAA logo and the Hook1 logo are cool, but neither symbolic of NorCal.

I agree... not too fuddy duddy... needs to be a little bit gritty.

I am sort of warming up to Brian's ling cod head idea with some old-school font.

Reminds me of a tatoo.

Maybe we need a tatoo artist to work on this for us.

Erik's mod of the lingcod logo is pretty cool.  Is it going to look okay on a T-shirt, though?  Kind of detailed...

I still think they need a little blood on them. I hate to say that I like Sky's stuff, but I do. I kind of have adult A.D.H.D., so I can never get through her whole posts. Sorry!

I am still researching the best quality t-shirt producer online. CafePress, who I use now, is pretty low quality. Spreadshirt is better quality, but only allows 3 colors for their higher quality stuff. It appear the best compromise is Zazzle - http://www.zazzle.com/custom/tshirts

There specs are:

Quote
    * We support JPEG, PNG, GIF, or TIFF files.
    * T-shirts are created at a minimum of 150 ppi (pixels per inch).
    * To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes below. For images smaller than these sizes, you should not fill the full area, but will have additional "white space"
    * Pocket (4" x 4") = 600 x 600 pixels
    * Horizontal (14" x 12") = 2100 x 1800 pixels
    * Vertical (12" x 14") = 1800 x 2100 pixels
    * If your image is bigger than these sizes, it'll turn out even better since it will be printed at an even higher resolution than the minimum.
