skygreen, can you make one of the jtf ones in the oval pattern with the angler all black.  maybe the original one of mooch, with his silouette black and only 3 more colors for the rest of it.  my computer is limited, I think i need to download a program, does anyone have any recommendation of the free sort from the web?

JTF... GIMP is some pretty good free software that is available on the web.  It's not as intuitive as some of the off the shelf software, but allows you to do some fairly complicated things... very good for being free.

I use JASC Paintshop Pro... it was pretty inexpensive and you can do some good stuff.... kind of like a lite knockoff of Adobe Photoshop.

OK... here's my submittal... I give Brian due credit for starting the ling head idea. I took his ling head and modified it to make it more logo-ish (if there is such a word).  I have it saved with transparent background and can use any color for the background... yellow looked as good as anything.  That's the only one I'm submitting... and i give Brian due credit for his initial venturing down this path.  Kudos to those of you who do this for a living... it's some time consuming stuff for the amateur like myself.

Very Nice KZ,  I like the font and the ling does look a bit more logo-ish while still maintaining a bit of ferocity.

Hey Erik, do you have that in a vector format as well?  Some of the points Sky made regarding size/format/etc.. where good ones.  Having the design in a vector based format means you can blow it up for banners with out worrying about pixelation.  I've also been working on "logo-izing" the design in vector format which is fairly similar to what you've just done.  I may or may not continue down that line.

If you don't mind Erik,  I'd like to suggest that the concept of a lingcod head with a paddle and rod crossed along with a wrap around font be our joint proposal for the logo.  In many ways we seemed to have feed off each other on this and I like the outcome.  In my opinion it's more the concept rather than the actual rendering that counts.  Many logos out there come in different formats and versions for different uses. This has some advantages... your logo-ized version with its simplified lines would make a great stencil for putting the logo on our kayaks, and would also work well in very small formats like avatars, business cards, etc..  I think my original cutout version would probably make a better medium sized print on a t-shirt or medium sized web image.  We could even go with a color photo-realistic version using my original photo and photos of a paddle and rod crossed (but I'm not sure how or why we'd really use that).  We probably would want a uniform font across all versions and you're latest font is also pretty cool looking and I still like the Algerian font.

Meanwhile, I might try my hands at the big "group hug" logo Mooch really seems to want with all his "camaraderie" talk.  But if I don't get it just right, it might not give off the right first impression.

Thinking back about my most recent post, I'd just like to add the following.  I really do think the overall concept and composition are more important then how it is rendered.  If someone out there has a great idea and can do a rough sketch or even express it verbally somehowI think they shouldn't feel shy about submitting it.  Despite what SkyGreen worries about, if it's really a good idea we can figure out how to get it rendered properly later and I'm betting we can do it at no cost other than some volunteer time from someone like me who likes to do this sort of thing.  In fact, if anyone has an idea out there that I like and maybe involves some fish (in case you haven't noticed I like fish) I might be able to help you out.

Hey Erik, do you have that in a vector format as well? ...

Eh... no... it's raster.  Because some layers were text and some were drawing, it wouldn't save the whole merged file as vector... what do I know... I'm kind of a hack at this.

Agreed... I have no pride of authorship... this is sort of a merging of our concepts.  With the way this one is arranged, the font needed the white outline to stand out.  I couldn't get the Algerian font to really look very good in this layout since the font overlaps the paddle and fishing rod.  If someone who knows what they are doing wants to run with the concept and clean it up... excellent.

I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a visual on Hobi-Wan's suggestion.  I'm envisioning a kayak coming nose first down a big wave... rod going bendo... line tight into the water.  Big treble hook on teh back of the kayak and some hint of a great white following the kayak in the wave.  Kind of a food chain arrangement and the kayak looking an awful lot like a CD1,000,000 sized rapala.  That'd be cool if it could be done.

Sky, Brian, Eric, Doug: nice work all of you. I have to say we have quite a pool of talent in the NCKA.

Frankly, I'd stick any of them on my kayak proudly.

Brian, Eric: I do like the Ling Cod rendering--it captures some of the excitement of hooking one of those rascals.

Sky: Great renditions and concepts. Just a thought and maybe I am takign this too far but how about a more stylized fisher? We do have women anglers, though far too few, and too faithful a rendition looks obviously male.

I still think add a breaking wave and a Lign Cod would be the cat's pajamas  :smt003

Erik and Brian you are definitely on the right track.  Nice work and working together  :smt008 .

I like the idea of the wave and fish and kayak together.  My slight variation on the idea that I will probably never have a chance to try so anyone who is willing can run with it is a large ling with hook/lour in its mouth and the fish is curled into a "C" shape with the head on the bottom and the tail on top but the tail section transitions into the crest of a large wave.  On that wave is a kayak fisher with a rod and tight ling hooked into the fish that is actually the wave he is riding.  It has a ying-yang sort of thing to it along with an extreme nature and cool fish.

One more thought. Let's make sure the logo can, in some form even if rendered down to a simple black and white stencil, be stencilled on to a flag we can hoist proudly on our boats for safety and bragging right as we fish tourneys im mixed company. I'd love to fly our flag.
