What's up, guys?

I'm in the market for a new pair of fishing shades. Any opinions on Costa Del Mar versus Maui Jim?

I've always liked Costa, but a lot of recent Costa reviews are saying the customer service has gone to sh*t and the grippy rubber nose and temple pads peel off or melt if you get sunscreen on them. That got me thinking about trying Maui Jim...

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts before I drop  $200+ on a new pair of shades.

I'm also open to other brands, but I definitely prefer glass lenses over poly (less prone to scratching).

Cheers,

~Alex

Certainly a greater range of styles and frame shapes with the Maui Jim's.

I really like the Yum brand polarized glasses for $10 @ Walmart. Otherwise, I wear my prescription Ray Bans.

I wish I could have made it to the ISE Show, but it didn't happen... Oh well.

I'm not terribly concerned about style (these will primarily be used for fishing and driving, not for fashion), but I generally prefer the wrap-around style since they tend to stay put on my face...

Thanks, Alex. I saw that pair in the classifieds. Looks like a good deal, but I think the Tuna Alley frames might be a little big for my face. They're listed as "large", and other Costas that fit me have been "medium".

I heard good things about these glasses and for that price, I'm buying one as a back up just in case I ever forget my shades.

I buy lots of these. Cheap polarized... Only way to go. Put them all over! For me and "that guy" that seems to forget them on sunny days....
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Might be worth trying on at a local dealer as far as fit.  I think he is asking like a 100.00 bucks off retail price. Plus no taxes.

Thanks for the Yum suggestion, guys, but I'm really looking for a high-end pair with glass lenses. I already have a couple pairs of cheap polarized shades I can use as backup if needed.

I'm trying to move away from buying cheap/disposable gear to the extent possible...

My vote is for Oakley.  Whatever you decide, make sure you try it on in person, vision through lens maybe different in person.  Also, spend the extra bucks for polarized version.  'went through the same thing last year, 'decided on Oakley.

I use both a lot and prefer Costa for OTW.  I use the 580G Corbina in the darkest color and I think it is darker than the dark kahuna (maybe it is just a better shape for me).  I like a fat temple for blacking out light from the sides but it is not great for driving or cycle commuting.   I also buy cheap used vuarnet and revo on ebay instead of crappy glasses, for my throwaways . . . .  $35 for a pair of old vuarnets with glass lenses.  I just look a little like Howie Mandel . . . .

I use both everyday, but never kayak fishing (I abuse and lose things kayaking way more than I should).   IMHO, Maui Jims have a (very) slight clarity advantage over Costas. Both I would put on a pedestal above any other brand I have tried, you can't go wrong with either.  Oakleys are nice, but not in the same league as either of these brands.
