Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Guns with enough humph  to put a man down without blowing thougth
The whole house
Locked gun don't protect you nor do unloaded one
Hey robber or rapper can you just give me 2 minutes to unlock my gun safe and reloads thank your dice a swell guy
Wile it's unlikely you would need to if you are to protect your house a loaded gun in the bedroom won't help you when your in the kitchen so you may want 2 or 3 spree  around the house because when someone come into your hose unexpectedly your allready off gaurd
glade you made it

I think that's the gist of it. But what if the rapper starts to bust some rhymes? Not totally clear on what to do then???   😄

Yeah....and I'm one of those 55 million.

I don't know why, but you guys keep insisting that preparedness is what I'm talking about. It isn't. I also reject the idea that only the whackos entertain such fantasies, as I have observed such fantasy from otherwise highly rational people.

The lines between preparedness and fantasy are understandibly blurred, how do you prepare for an event without first imagining the potential consequences, outcomes and propper reactions?

I don't romanticize self-defense in my home, it's more of a nightmare scenario for me to be perfectly honest.  Should I ever need to use my firearms I'll be hunkered down in a room with a phone and my firearm hoping that I don't have to use it but prepared to do so.  I have fully thought out, or "fantasized" if you're inclined on labeling, the entry points into my home and the best way to defend myself and my daughter.

I've also fantasized, as in imagined, what I'd do and how I'd respond if I wound up in the water and separated from my kayak.  I do it everytime a boat goes down or people die in the ocean or lake.  It may be morbid but it's what I think about and how I prepare to handle adverse events.

Maybe if you put it in perspective for us by describing some of the more common fantasy stories or scenarios you hear.

A real life example
I hade just done a job in south sac a lovely community (not)
I had a job in Stockton I had never bee there before
But after the good folks in south sac tryied to seal my equipment
And looking at a map I thought what the hell why not
So when I packed my gear tools and other supplies I headed up to Stockton from San Jose I arrived at the am pm on alpine across from oak park
I then made contact with the worker and was given the go ahead
I did my inside work and headed to the roof after loading the roof with supplies I started to work  buy chance I looked down towards the side walk
Yes I have eyes in the back of my head sorta
A young guy maybe sixteen pulls a gun raises his hand sideways
I pulled my side are but then realized I'm on a roof so I simply stepped back he no longer had any line of site I holstered my gun when I looked the guy was gone
His lucky day I could have turned him into a pool of blood because unlike him I know how to shoot
Gun ownership and pictures of the old west are not the same
If fact the way the old west is pictured in movies is just for the movies
glade you made it

After being burglarized onced, we bought a chow chow then had an alarm installed. I just hope and pray that no one tries to force themselves in our house while we are home. Let's just say I am very prepared to protect my family if that ever happens.

Why focus on them?  I'm not. Some guy made an interesting observation and lots of people got defensive instead of looking at the merits of the observation.... which in turn perpetuates the discussion.
I agree. Sometimes it reminds me of the nutjob doomsday preppers who seem to fantasize about zombies.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Everyone here should be prepared for a Carrington event or a 8.0 San Andreas or 9.0 cascadia quake. It's irresponsible to not prepare. No zombies necessary, the actual likely stuff is sufficient.

I have a home security alarm system and guns. I have guns in the house for the same reason I have fire insurance. I hope I never use it but if I need it I'll be glad I had it. With proper training, a gun in the house is no more dangerous than a hammer.

I'm pretty new to the USA and I have to say I don't understand the home invasion fantasies lots of Americans seem to have. Is this something that happens often? Are there any kind of statistics to justify the need for these types of precautions? If you just love guns, that's something I can understand - but why is it wrapped up in "home defense"?
I think I have a lot to learn about this country.

Here's some statistics.  https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/burglary

Home invasions including murder, GBH, and rape do happen everywhere. As far as "often or justify the need", I'd say often enough TO justify the need.

I can recall quite a few horrible home invasions that occurred here in Sonoma County over the years. And as others have said these real life nightmares were not fantasy's for the victims.

A fundamental question you need to answer is if you're capable of pulling the trigger when the time comes. I believe most people aren't. I live in the country behind a fence and locked gate. In early 2000's, the big bad wolf came calling one night after he had raped and beaten a girl. Had I not answered the door with a loaded shotgun to his stomach, not sure how the story would of ended for me and my girlfriend at the time.
