I'm pretty new to the USA and I have to say I don't understand the home invasion fantasies lots of Americans seem to have. Is this something that happens often? Are there any kind of statistics to justify the need for these types of precautions? If you just love guns, that's something I can understand - but why is it wrapped up in "home defense"?

The first post described what I would simply consider somebody making a wrong turn. I have lived in rural areas and when I would see somebody coming down my driveway, some kind of wild west gun fight never came to mind. It's not very comforting to know that if I get lost somewhere, showing up on someones property or doorstep to ask for help might end with a gun in my face.

Not saying you shouldn't have guns or you don't need them or anything like that. I just personally don't understand it. I think I have a lot to learn about this country.

Yes people like to break into houses off the beaten path.  Some don't care if anyone is home and others are just flipping nuts.  Sometimes it's hard to tell why they are there.  I would not suggest brandishing until you have a better idea on what trespassers motives are.  But unfortunately we have a trespassing bear right now that has been hanging around our property. I also saw a Mt Lion down the street so when I go to lock up or check on our animals I am almost always armed at night and sometimes during the day if there are unknown noises or the animals are acting up for unknown reasons.

We live in a relatively quiet area when it comes to violent crimes but not to long ago a lady woke up with a man in her house with knives in his hands.  She somehow ran out and got away but it just goes to show that being prepared is such a better choice.

Our new property is not far from an RV campground that rents spaces by the month.  Many who are on drugs and walk or ride bikes to town because they don't own a car or don't have licenses.  I have seen them as they look down our driveway.  No problems yet but I am always aware of my surroundings and making my wife feel secure on our land is a priority.

Up here some people grow pot and sell it. Some people like to steal pot and money, and sometimes they get the wrong house.

I whip out my trusty six-string and play an original. Clears the room every time. If that doesn't work I have a mossy .12 ga and a glock model 22 in .40 that are pretty handy. The guitar gets them first usually tho.

If I didn't have my 10" forehead and Popeye forearms, I would invest invest $100 in a break action 12 gauge to keep under my mattress and take out one of them. :smt003

growing up in east side san jose, we got burglarized a few times.  when i moved to the south side, it happened again.  if someone just happened to be home and the burglars came in anyway, it couldda got ugly quick.  i also have a friend who left town one day and the burglars came and tied up his parents and sister.

this shit is real whether you like it or not.

Right.. but we are not talking about taking reasonable precautions. Forumname is talking about the FANTASY that many Americans seem to share.. this fantasy ( as I observe it) usually involves a trespasser/robber/etc. who is killed (usual) or scared off by a homeowner with a firearm.

Don't believe us? I'd like to know how many of us have actively fantasized about falling off of our kayaks in a bad situation only to be saved by our PFDs!.... Nobody?... The PFD scenario is statistically WAY more likely to happen than having to fend off an intruder with a firearm.

I'm not going to worry about other people's fantasies. Who goes a fuck about that?  Gun, sex, power, or otherwise. That's pretty goddamn far from my concern. Thought police acadany is that way <<<<<

I think it was an interesting observation. I wouldn't say that I'm worried about it.

It is called thinking things through and being prepared.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

But some people prefer the govt just take care of them and their needs. Cops eat donuts and take reports.
