laser pointer.  they'll assume its a red dot sight
And then you have to turn on your flood lights and announce over the speakers "Put your hands up, you are surrounded. Back away from the driveway"  :smt044

I think aiming a rifle or pistol in high stress situation might be more difficult than point, shoot, and spread!!  Plus, racking a gauge is quite a deterring noise in itself.

This.  ^^^^^^^^^^
Yell, scream and drop as many F bombs as you can as you are approaching the person.
Not too many people want to stick around with a crazy person sporting a gun.

AR-15 for all around safety

223 is the safest round for in home defense due to the fact that it losses the most energy on impact due to its rip And tumble design. Only second to bird shot in a 12  :smt006

i hope no one ever had to "use" to answer your question.

i used to have a ruger gp100 hot and ready with hollowpoint.
these days i have a 12g rem 870 with 00buck.  i had 3" shells loaded but after trying them out at the range, they kicked my ass so i downgraded to low-recoil 2-3/4" 00buck.

hope i never have to use it. at home.

i recommend not having it racked as the firing pin can  strike on a drop. just a recipe for disaster.  i store it with safety off  with firing pin down.  first rack would load a shell and pull the firing pin back.

Can't praise the low recoil buckshot for home defense enough!  U might wanna be Mr. Magnum, but 1 controlled center mass placed shot is better than your magnum, and may be the shot that saves your a--.

Mossberg 500 or Rem870 are both great home defense guns. Make sure the whole family learns how to shoot them. Shotguns are Easier to aim and shoot vs pistols/rifles.
On a budget the Mossberg 500 can be bought with both 18 inch and 28 inch barrels. The Rem870 usually comes in either 18" or 28".
Load up with bird shot for inside the house so it doesn't penetrate thru drywall. 00 Bucketshot for other uses.
Pistols and rifles are good if you have a lot of practice.

Dogs, at least 3 large ones that bark like hell and attack the front door whern strangers walk up.   My Malamute took care of the only person that ever tried to force entry.  I found her chewing on the left butt cheek of his jeans, blood was all over the hall and back deck.  Watsonville PD found him at Watsonville Hospital, it took 300 stiches to close his wounds :smt044

Haha thanks fellas for the feedback, my father just bought a mini-14. Im leaning on the shotgun. The reason for the lights is my property is pretty dark. It's almost intimidating to drive in.
