Long-range forecast is making Wed-Thur pre-tourney look barf-o-riffic:

http://www.stormsurf.com/locals/mendo.shtml

Eric, I keep hearing bits and pieces about how the launching situation at the Cove is much different this year compared to previous years.  I know you've launched there several times so far this year.  Is it more of a "surf launch" type of situation this year with the sanded-in launch?  Especially with the low tides forecasted for tourney day?

Crossing my fingers that the ocean lays down for the weekend...

Not as worried about the surf as the wind possibility.

Chris-

Yeah it isn't as protected from the surf. Not a problem at high tide but at low tide the end of the breakwater has potential for breaking waves.

Thanks Doug.  This'll help determine how I load my gear prior to launching (i.e., strapping EVERYTHING down) and pare down how much stuff I bring out with me.  I got too used to the easy-peasy launching at the Cove in years past.

Thanks for the info Ryan.  Have you launched there during a rough day at low tide?  Notice any difference?

Couple of times it was pretty gnarly.  Stuffed everything that wasn't screwed down into the xfactor.  I thought for sure I was gonna go for a swim.  Seen a couple power boats get tossed side to side and a couple yakkers get rolled but we were able to land without getting tossed.

Opening day was hairy at low tide.  PBs didn't want to land and a lot of them waited.  Kayakers just landed anyway.  Ryan and I saw a kayaker yardsale it on Monday.

It;s not as easy as it used to be.

Great question, Chris.  Great answers and info so far.

The launch has been great lately - today it was easy peasy... - but it's definitely sanded in.  You can almost drive to the end of the breakwater at any average low tide...   If there's no south or west in the forecast it's pretty much like normal.  The hazards come when you're coming in and don't expect a little breaker under you in shallow water - shouldn't be a problem.  If there's a significant south or west swell we will need to watch out.

Just a heads up if you're hanging out at the beach by the ramp...stay back from the cliffs. There's been some slides recently.

On those slides,...

I was very concerned when I saw the news reports of "four different slides" at Shelter Cove.  They showed pictures of caution tape at the ramp, but there were no pics of the actual slides.  They also talked of people rescued by all terrain vehicle, but I didn't see pics or video of that either.  That's all fine, but when we were at the Cove in the following days we couldn't see any evidence of a significant change from what is already the case - constantly eroding hillsides all the way from the launch to Deadman's...

For what it's worth, I think a mountain was made of a mole hill, but I do acknowledge that there is risk to be taken along that bluff.
