Just through pure statistics - we had between 8-12,000 gun murders in 2012.  If we had let's say, 90% less handguns, I'm extraordinarily confident there would have been less.

Why don't we just make murder illegal and solve the issue once and for all?!
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

I want to know what percentage of handgun deaths are bad guys vs bad guys? Difficult to determine, but I'd wager it's easily over 80%. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Not encouraging it, but I'm not going to miss them. Apparently no one else does either as that info isn't available.
No one cares!... until some wack-a-doo shoots up a theater full of innocent people. Then it's like " Oh my god! If we take away AK-47's and AR-15's it'll never happen again!" What's to stop someone from making an explosive, or some other chemical agent from household products and accomplishing the same result?
How many of the  handguns used to commit homicide last year, or previous years,  were legally obtained by the shooter?  I cant find that information.
In order for me to form an educated opinion as to whether current legislation is working, or not, I need to know these  things but I can't find them.
Weird...
Until then I'm going to continue to assume that some people are evil, and I need to be able to defend myself from them.

Maybe if we allowed someone to research gun violence that would give you more information.

edit- someone impartial, not necessarily the CDC, but at least someone that doesn't have a predetermined goal.  someone not supported by the gun lobby or by liberal causes.  It appears at least on the surface that the NRA doesn't care to really find out the truth about what causes gun violence and prefers reliance on rhetoric.  If they did, they would support honest gun violence studies with their dollars and cooperate with others on it.

The argument that you are safer with a gun in your home just doesn't hold true. If an intruder has a gun pointed at them, they are going to react in a genetically dictated, VERY well understood, and WIDELY accepted manner. They are going to display a "fight or flight" reaction. If they happen to have a gun, too, they're probably going to fire it at you.

This is why data and statistics clearly show that your chances of getting shot go UP, not down, if you own a gun.

It is also human nature to feel that we are above statistics. We all feel like we're the outliers who will come out on top. WE are the ones who are actually going to follow through on our New Years resolutions. WE are the ones who are going to get the first shot off in a conflict. WE will persevere in situations that statistically don't work out in our favor.

You can't all be outliers. It just doesn't work that way.

100% wrong!!

Anyone coming into my house, uninvited will first be met by my dog, who will not bite, but will sound like you are about to be breakfast. That is the distraction I need to place a well placed bullet into their vermillion pyramid. Even if they have a gun on my forehead, finger on the trigger, they die and drop the gun. That is what I train for. Weapon or not, they are in the zone of danger once they cross the threshold of my home, and I can presume that they intend to inflict bodily harm if confronted. That has been upheld in courts of law for decades. Civil court is a different story.

OK... So Montana and his dog are clearly outliers. God forbid his dog barks at his son in the middle of the night for some reason... Maybe when he's sneaking back in after a night with his friends?

Bmb-Not sure what you mean by this. This info is out there.
I don't think you'll find these points though because it can work against either side of the argument and so it is not mentioned.
Pro controll- indicates we need more restrictions and less guns.
Anti control-  indicates that all legislation and restrictions can be circumvented by determined individuals.
It's a catch 22.
Again, I go back to the only truth... The only way to stop people from killing each other is through global socio-cultural change. A complete 180 in human nature and ideology.
Good luck with that.
