That would be a good question for F&W's 'Dear Abby' lady.

Answering biology questions would be a refreshing change.

So nearly as I can tell in 5 minutes of googling, domoic acid does bioaccumulate and biomagnify in predators.  Some shellfish retain harmful levels of domoic acid for far longer than others, principally razor clams.  Crabs tend to have their domoic acid levels drop relatively quickly.

Domoic acid biomagnifies in predators.  It is water soluble, and is excreted through the kidneys fairly quickly in most predator fish, unlike say mercury.  The phytoplankton eating fishes such as anchovies, jacksmelt, sardines, etc. can get very high levels of domoic acid during a red tide.

I found nothing specific about cabezon or any other sculpins.

All this is to say that Annie asks a really good question and I'm no closer to answering it than I was 5 minutes ago.

A delay, depending on how long it lasts of course, could be a good thing. I should give the crabs a chance to fill out a little better. Early season crabs sometimes are pretty light.

Just trying to find an upside. :smt001

You might get crabs from cabs, especially in the city.... :smt044

Domoic acid bioaccumulation occurs up the food chain. So probably not the best idea to eat fish caught during these harmful algal blooms.

It will open when the crabs test clean.
