Second year at GS. Had a blast meeting new people and seeing familiar faces! Thank you Eric for putting on a great event as always.

Thanks to GS I'm going to be spending more time thinking about catch and release

I had a great time.  This was my first GS and Ive heard a lot about it in the last year since I joined NCKA.  I wasn’t disappointed.  I went into it with goal of catching some decent fish, have some fun and meet some more NCKA crew.  Check, check and check.

Friday was pretty good fishing.  Weather was great and I bagged a few nice rockfish for the taco stand and a nice 27" ling to take home.  Also got a fatty 15" blue on a pink p-line mini hootchie.  Caught all my rockfish on those mini hootchies.

Saturday was much different.  Conditions had deteriorated and I had a case of the brown bottle flu!  After launching I had problems with my Lowrance unit.  Gps was working but not sonar.  Added some water to the transducer container, checked connections, rebooted and it powered up then shutoff never to power up again.  After riding the rodeo seas for  awhile the free spool lever on my reel started giving out.  So now Im using Navionics app on my phone to navigate and having to use my Leatherman to tighten this damn free spool lever every drop and the bite was slow….no worries.  Ive already had a blast and theres still a kick ass potluck to come later!  Bring it on!  I finished off the session with about 9 or 10 small rockfish, a verm, blue, and some blacks.  Also released a few underlings.

The potluck was for real.  Fish tacos…legend.  Eric and Jim did great job with the festivities.  Great vibes at the cove!!  My biggest regret was not keeping a fish for Gyotaku!  There's always next year!

My first GS and my biggest impression was all the people who came up to me and said, "Hi Jerry!"  and I had no idea who they were.  They sure knew me though and that made me feel like a rock star!  Ha!
And not just a hi either, but an introduction, sit down and chat until we knew each other and a bit of history.

I got the opportunity to fish with Eric on Friday and I learned more than I even hoped on how to fish for salmon and how to fish for what the cove has to offer when the salmon decided it wasn't time yet.

Then the oyster bake; off the chart with how many oysters.  87 dozen were distributed and many were smoked and BBQ'd right there at my site.  We had jig heads and swimbaits all ready to go from ATD and Branson.  Those guys attracted a crowd!

My neighbors were just such great people; Brad on one side and Jim on the other.  Just to most mellow and friendly people anyone could hope to camp next to.

Pot luck was a hit, with the TACO shack kicking things off maybe 30 minutes early and getting the edge off everyone who were in line for the main event.  Plenty of room for everyone to sit and enjoy the food, the camaraderie and the show Eric and Jim, along with Danglin put on.  Anyone who was called up to the stage for an award or raffle prize  was not going to escape without a hug.  HOW COOL IS THAT!!??!!

In line at the taco shack, this guy shouts to me, YOU!  and I start to think, uh oh, I did something... YOU NEED A BEER?

The Old Town Tent with a great display of kayaks, cameras and other gear;

And the man of the hour, Mike.  The Rep who showed up with the big raffle prize of the Old Town Predator XL.

I got to shelter cove with the goal of enjoying fishing, eating good food, and catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, without worrying about winning and just being happy to do what we all love, spend some quality time on the water. With two kids its been few and far between outings which is just part of being a parent…

What I got out of this weekend was all that and then some. I felt the NCKA love through all of the generosity, camaraderie, and great food. I’m glad I was able to share some as well.

When I was looking at the prizes for the raffles I thought to myself, that would be awesome to win that NCKA ceramic mug, or even a new reel. Then I see the grand prize Old Town Predator XL with a trolling motor, and now I’m thinking how cool it would be to own that! There was a break in the raffle action so I go to the room to get some stuff and I hear LilRiverMan knocking on my door…”run! They’re calling you’re name! Run!”

I book for the main stage and see people cheering and little Dylan being hoisted in the air… I won? I’m still in shock and had to pinch myself a couple of times, but I can’t wait to get this kayak on the water and get my 2.5 year old son on it for his first fishing trip.

I am humbled and amazed at what a truly awesome event this is, and grateful for everyone that makes this event a success. NCKA is the best!

Sincerely,

Roger

Hey Sacyak,

Day 4: May 16, Game Day!  I went for lings first but there were two periods in the early morning of sustained gusts.  One from say 6:30 to 7:30 and one about an hour to an hour and a half later.  After that it settled some and the bite picked up before the fan came on again though not as much as Friday.  After I got my two I trolled for salmon for nothing.  My last pot was gone too but Ken found it one the beach.  Not sure if it was blown or walked on the swell or encountered the same skum that hit my first one.  At least I got it back.

I think my boys dug it out of the surf on Saturday afternoon and I told them to leave it up on the beach as I knew someone would come looking for it. Glad you found it.
Jeff

Congrats on winning the yak, Roger. You and Dennis and your families are an integral part of GS. It was awesome to see you win.

As last year, had a fantastic time even though I didn't get OTW this year due to Bronchitis and wind. Just wanted to thank all the people who make this event a huge success. Being around NCKA kayakers and my own club (DOA Humboldt) as well, makes me realize, to borrow the old Honda Tagline, you meet the nicest people on a kayak! Took some photos though and have a link here.

It was my first big NCKA event and I'm glad I finally made it to GS9.

Thank you to Eric and others for organizing this event.

It was fun and exciting to meet all the NCKA folks in person. Finally got to put a real face to the names on the board.

FishingAddict and I drove up together wish we had more time to fish before and after the event. We went out Friday afternoon (and probably shouldn't have) on a windy and choppy afternoon. Just glad everyone made it back from the washing machine alive and well.

Attaching a pic of me taken by FishingAddict from Friday.

some rough water, some wind, some glass water and some fish.....lots of good times, friends, and seafood.

My 3rd year of Gimme Shelter did not disappoint.

I fished the 15th & 16th, hoped for the major big fish, but still had a blast catching what I did. For me it is rarely about the fish anyway, more of the vibe & groove that one falls into while doing what you love in a place of amazing beauty & ruggedness.

"Cove Life".....Cen Coast, that is going to become an art piece of some type. Filed away for future!

Just a wonderful 4 day trip. Thank you to all my friends that made it so.
