This was my first time not only Shelter cove, but north of Tomales Bay.  I had such a great time! The weather was not ideal, but beautifully rugged and enjoyable in its own way.  The paddle home on Friday afternoon was as everybody has already stated, an adventure. One which I actually enjoyed.  To call conditions dangerous at that time is an understatement, but I felt a mix excitement and confidence.  This confidence was founded in knowing we were all surrounded by competent watermen who all had each other’s back. Literally. That snotty trudge home was actually a high point of the trip for me; that’s not to say I want to make a habit of paddling in those conditions, but it was pretty cool.  Made me feel very alive!

The vibe and attitude of this group is what really made this weekend so magical. As a first timer to GS, I was welcomed by everybody I came into contact with. Even the locals were friendly, despite our occupation which at times frustrated them. I’d really like to thank Danglan for the live weather updates on Saturday.  Because of you I had the confidence to round Abalone Point and enjoy the completely undisturbed coastline which lies beyond.  Thank you Dan. I’d like to take you home and have you watching my back from the Davenport cement tower every weekend.

Finally Id like to thank Eric for his efforts making this possible.  The work, stress, and cost you incur for us to inundate your home fishing grounds is so selfless and so appreciated.  I very much enjoyed meeting you, and look forward to fishing with you in the future.

I have heard mixed messages about NCKA events. I heard albion was a joke, raffle was fixed and so on. Then I heard that give me shelter was the shit. So I decided for my first NCKA event I would attend give me shelter. The event, people, staff and over all atmosphere were great. I'm glad I attended, and eric put on a great event. Thanks for a great event

Hrmmm...and may I ask who told you this??   Whoever told you that must have been upset he didn't win anything in the raffle or something.   :smt012

Either way, whoever has that mentality is better off not coming to Albion anyways.

I'm glad you had fun at GS9.

You are way off base about NCKA events though.

The coordinators of these events put their heart and soul into them...and every single one I have ever been to is an amazing experience.

Hopefully you will see that for yourself in the future...rather than listening to someone else and publicly bad mouthing one of our annual and longest running tourneys.

Let's keep this thread positive though....here's a few pics for your viewing pleasure.  :smt004

Sincerely,

Jim

Thank you for saying something Jim. I was going to but my conflict resolution skills are leaving a bit to be desired right now so I thought it best to keep my mouth shut.

Didn't think I was gonna make this one until the day before, and boy am I glad I did! Thanks to Big Jim for getting me motivated to go and for being a great road dogg. Big props to Eric and everybody who helped out for putting on an amazing event, and congrats to all the winners! I've never had so much fun :smt003

On a side note, the best way to tell if an event is "a joke" or not is to actually show up and judge for yourself. I've never been to an NCKA event I didn't like

some good memories from Saturday:

-paddling out to Abalone Pt on Saturday in the wind & chop with MDoka Matt & wondering "what are we doing out here?" while laughing at the conditions.

-a cold sierra on the beach with some awesome fisherman & divers

-heading to Mario's with a posse, and hearing the group cheer as each of us entered the room, and seeing some favorite OG faces (tote, Al, Jim, Antonio-you guys made the bar trip worth it)

-sharing a beverage with BigJim and extending my hand with "OK dude, gimme yer best" (all i can say is that thank goodness I work with my hands a lot :smt005 )

as you all can see, I'm at work today, but my head is still at the Cove.

It was an AWESOME time at the bar with you and Laura and Matt and Chelsea and EVERYBODY else.

I also thought it was great for us and some of the locals (including Tony from the campground) to get a chance to mingle and share a drink and a laugh and talk about how much fun the event always is.

Looking forward to next year already!!
