From my limited experience I quite like my old mazda B2500 pickup (basically a ford ranger)

Honda CRV or (if you can stand the styling)  Honda Element are both solid alternative used vehicle choices. My CRV gets 25 MPG with almost 200k miles on it. Other family members have a pair of Elements and they've been to Baja and up to Wa without problems.

for larger vehicles, the Honda Ridgeline or Pilot seem to be very nice rides too.

You should get a hummer.

Bushy

Keping them full of fuel is a nightmare.  My Toyo can go to Camp Roberts and back on a tankful, my assigned Humvee is two tank fuls and then some.

I was kidding cause of the avatar name.  Sansano and I were just discussing neither of us know known ANYONE with a hummer.

I have a 2000 outback fun 4 banger.  Just got a 2014 Outback 6 cyl and unreal!!

My personal ride is the 2003 Eurovan westphalia edition.  If only it had AWD........

Seriously, I would say outback 6 or Toyota Forerunner.

I was pretty set on a 4runner til I found out the mpg.  Plus I'd like something not so high, for easy loading.

Basic Tacoma 2 wheel drive, or Corolla/Accord wagon is what I'm looking for.

Funny looking at Toyota pickups, they all have hood scoops, trd racing packages, pre-runners, 4 doors...  tough to find a base model 4 cylinder it seems.

The base models are out there.  I have been looking for a Tacoma for my son for a while and I came across more than a few older base model Tacomas with the 2.4 four cylinder motor.

Me myself, I like having a truck, but not a 4x4, for the life of the truck you may if your lucky get 5% 4x4 use out of it.

I wouldn't completely dismiss em, both my trucks are 4x4 and both get used.  My duramax goes 4x4 when launching/retrieving my boat and its like gold when I go snowboarding and drive right past cold wet chain monkeys lacing up tires at $60 a pop.  My toyota is more of a toy and having 4 gave me an opportunity to get it offroad at hollister hills a couple times.

It certainly has its uses if its gonna be a weekend vehicle and you want to explore outside your current scope of recreational activities.

I love my '06 Outback, but just got ANOTHER check engine light this morning. Out of nowhere my car revved and held at 3,000 rpm while I was driving on a SF city street. This made driving very tricky, since it's a MT and I had no control over RPMs... Pulled over, turned off, turned back on, and seems to be driving OK... Time to have the check engine light checked....again....

I have a Toyota & had a similar thing happen last week.  It goes back in for the repair tomorrow.  Mine is a 2000 Toyota.  As soon as I came to a stop, the engine would idle but no throttle.  Turned it off - back on & revved fine.  Check Engine Lite came on.  Turned out to be a Throttle Control Sensor.  Toyota has 2 of them on the throttle body.  They work opposite of each other to average the throttle needed based on the accelerator petal position & tell the computer how much "gas" to give it.  They tend to go out at 150k.  I was 200 miles under that!  One was like $50 & the other was $500 ... mine was the more expensive one  :smt012  Might have something to do with that if you don't have an actual "throttle cable".  Computer will tell all.  Mine first happened a few weeks ago & didn't happen again till last week.

Still love my Toyota though!

find an old lady selling her 90's civic with low miles on it...pay her 2K and the drive it for the next 7-10 years problem free...change the oil every 3-5 k...every 5 years get some new tires..wipers every 3 yrs......roof racks off c-list...drive forever...never break....never feel bad gassing the thing up..... put the kayak on the roof with ease...oh they go anywhere most trucks will and the roof racks , also can carry a couch...so the two times a year you need truck...you now dont...30-40 bucks to fill it ...drive it two weeks.. :smt044
