I had the same reaction...that falling coconut stat is so stupid.  Those might the odds for the general population...but if you are going out on the NorCal big blue those odds have got to be way higher.

Well guess maybe but then again. in over 100 years less then 200 attacks. I like those odds even before this happened to me. Stay out in Sharktober... LOL

While you're waiting for the official word on the length estimate, I took a stab at it based on this paper.

http://astro.temple.edu/~tud02746/publications/Lowry%20et%20al.,%202009.pdf

Everything in the paper is in metric and they provide log-log regression equations for various species of sharks to convert bite size and tooth distance to total shark length.    There are two slightly different equations for GWS depending on whether you are using upper jaw or lower jaw IDD (inter-dental distance), but they are close enough that I only bother with the upper jaw equation.  Solving for x (total length) I came up with the following plot which I converted back to good ol' American imperial units.

Based on this image..

The IDD looks to be about 2 inches even which puts this shark at 21.4 ft long

There is another set of equations in the paper if you happen to have the circumference of the bite.

Wow. Good thing I don't live in CA.  My friends would start wondering why there are big hooks affixed to their loaner kayaks and why I insist their kayak is cabled off to mine.  FISH ON!

Glad you are safe!! Alaska is SO boring relative to CA....

Glad you are ok bro.

Getting hit by coconuts...smh. If you never go in the water, you are 100% guaranteed to NEVER get attacked. If you stay in California, you are 100% guaranteed to never get hit with a coconut.
The more you are on the water the higher your odds. The more you are on the water where sharks are common, the higher your odds. The more you think about it, your odd.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

FWIW~ Shark Research Commitee estimated the BeanOverSee'r at 18 feet pushing 19ft. The tooth marks were exactly at 2".

Yeah the Shark research committee initial guess is pushing the 20ft mark. Gonna let them try and get some DNA out of the many teeth marks considering there is probably 10 holes from teeth may have a chance of getting some and matching it too another shark that attacked in 2010 they believe it was the same shark.

Will get a closer number once they get these teeth marks in person and get a little better measurements.

I forget what they said about the different sets of teeth but this set is what I believe he said there going off. The other set can very more then this set of teeth.

Just unreal what happened.

Its great to know that you came away from this soul touching experience with no physical trauma.
Strong work on the documentation!
I am starting to ponder if it is no longer an "if" but a "when" for those who fish the pacific in the fall.

Yeah crazy the photo I just posted shows a little better the marks on the left are pretty even and easy to measure with a strait edge and are 2.25IDD. but either way massive shark. That feeling of getting tossed and then hit again and pushed is just embedded that is for sure.

This story ended up being picked up by national news.  Just saw it on Fox News this morning as I was out of town fishing all weekend and did not catch any other news stories.  They said the guys went back out fishing after this experience. Did that include you in a new kayak or did you sit it out.  If it happened to me I am not so sure I could go right back out.  Even if the odds are on my side, a mentally ill shark that likes kayaks keeps me wondering.

No so both kayaks that were hit were taken out and not able to be fished any further.

The first attack being around 11am or so and then my attack occurred at 2pm.

So yes myself and three others kept fishing after the first attack after making sure he made it in safely.

Ryan,

Did you see much of the shark during the "dance" and did you experience slow motion time or tunnel vision?
Shannon
PS- I also saw the shark week episode that features Ralph Collier. Seemed(at the time) that the "serial killer" theory along with the two year cycle thing was a bit tv/drama making. I recall at the end of the episode when the narrators talked about what 2014 would bring and  holy crap if it didn't happen. The piece of floating plastic is now your best friend for life, no doubt. Have to say that we are all stoked that your flesh is intact. Look forward to next year during shark week when you tell your story to the world.
