Been talking today with plenty of people but by far the most interesting conversations have been with the guys from the shark research that goes into shark week and such and all. Sent them some more detailed photos and meeting with them in the next week or two and sounds like will be able to head out this month and try and find this shark with them and get some DNA from it.

The guy that filmed the documentary about surf beach for 2013 shark week theory is that this has been the same shark from 2010 and 2012 but wants proof and invited me to join in. The breeding cycle for females is every two years and thinks this is a female heading south to breed on her two year cycle.

Based on this photo they are saying "very large white" should get actual size down to the foot soon based on photo's that I sent him.

Glad you're OK Ryan.  Thank for sharing hopefully your once in a life time encounter with the Land Lord.

Lucky I had a VHF as no one else had one on them

I'm glad you're OK, Ryan, but I gotta say, hanging out offshore with guys who don't even have VHF?...

Good luck out there.

Holy phuk is right. A friend sent me a link to the news story & video -- I didn't realize that was you.

Glad it was only the kayak that ended up with holes in it.

Can't wait to hear the follow up from the Research folks.

Would love to hear more when/if you are up to it.  Was it two quick snappy chomps, or did she come back for seconds?  Did you see her at all, or she disappeared after the ambush?

Damn...  Glad you are ok.  Tore your yak up more than any of the previous events, I think.  Think of the force it takes to slice up a hobie like butter.

Ryan contacted me about his ordeal Friday night. He walked me through the incident, although there's a chance there are a few inaccuracies as we didn't speak for long and he was pretty revved up. My interest was in recording the details so the community can learn from it.

All of these great white strikes have been harrowing, but this one is scarier than most. His Outback was absolutely shredded in comparison to some of the other attacks. He's a lucky man to emerge physically unhurt. Once again, the fishing kayak was a life saver. So were having friends nearby, wearing a PFD and most especially, carrying a marine VHF to call for help. He told me they would have had to abandon his sinking kayak.

Here's the story: http://www.kayakfishmag.com/news/vandenberg-great-white-shark-attack-details/

One of our readers pointed out that the first kayak struck was a PA14. So far as I know, it was the first hit on a fishing 'kayak' of that size. Anyone know of another?

The hull was 3/4 full in minutes. . . scary.
I think I have room for a few more noodles in my revo, not for long after hearing about this incident

Paul

This shark was massive.

Talked with the shark research guys and it is some of the largest bite marks that they have seen as well.

There guess based on measurements is pushing 20ft in length.

Just crazy.

So since the year 1900. I am attack number 183 it sounds like.

Horrible club to be part of that's for sure.

Really sorry to hear about this Ryan. Glad you didn’t get hurt. Please keep us posted on the DNA exam. I assume they are comparing tooth fragments left in all three attacks? Very interesting. I don't know if Id rather be told one badass shark goes around hitting people every year, or if they are all likely to hit people. Crazy shit either way.

According to the experts at Good Morning America, we are much more likely to get hurt from falling coconut…So at least that is reassuring  :smt104   (...that made me wanna puke)

In the first event, an unidentified man fishing the ocean for the first time from a brand new 14-foot Hobie Pro Angler was thrown from his boat around 11 a.m. A power boater rescued the man, who was uninjured, and took him to shore.

Did the noobie just fall out of his PA14 or did the GWS leave some teeth marks behind?

I had the same reaction...that falling coconut stat is so stupid.  Those might the odds for the general population...but if you are going out on the NorCal big blue those odds have got to be way higher.

I had a gasket fall out un-noticed during washing of my fish-n-dive last week, and yesterday took water in through the 10" -under seat circle hatch-- where it was supposed to be....my fish -n-dive is stuff as full of noodles and foam as it can take---with me and all my gear...I was noticing some definite water slushing transfer by the end of the day ...and by shore it was impossible to drag out...I believe my noodles and foam will keep it floating if it filled up...but I would for sure be bobbing IN the water maybe just under the surface mostly....changed my idea of the noddles "floating" me on top in an emergency or hull breach....they would float the thing with me on it,,,but more like a jellyfish than an otter...imho...

just food for thought

for sure odds are screwed and not real data...never in the water population should not be data

IMHO the odds are more like this ...number of s.u.p and kayaks on the water in the month of oct on the ca. coast --total for all days....and number of attacks....divide that
