Wow, I really cant wait to hear what happens with the data they collect.  Was it the same shark that hit both yaks that day?  And possibly other attacks years prior!?!  Fascinating!!!

So sounds like the two attacks on Friday the 3rd were the same shark most likely same general size based on descriptions from seperate anglers witnessing. No one saw both animals.

Did you see much of the shark during the "dance" and did you experience slow motion time or tunnel vision?

No did not honestly see much of the shark. It all happened in what felt like SLOW motion but all really quick would say the whole thing in reality maybe 20 seconds but who knows.

I do know that some big azz teeth marks are in my Hobie and that plastic saved my life.

By coincidence, it turns out that I know the other person who was attacked on the surfboard the day B4 your attack Ryan. A report from the victim's father said that his son was surfing at Wave beach near Lompoc. He was sitting on his surfboard with legs dangling in the surf zone. The shark tried to grab him from a side angle and when the shark brushed the side of the board a tooth of the shark broke a piece of the surfer's kneecap off. The surfer was NOT bitten, he was bumped. He is now recovering on crutches. From the eye witness report, the attack was a "classic eyes rolled back" side swipe.

We, wife & I saw a quick blurb of the attack on our local news channel yesterday  Ch 6 or 8?(Day before, can't recall) and  said "You still want to take your kayak out on the ocean and fish now" with a scowl
I had to change the subject real quick after that.

Glad you weren't hurt and survived.  Can't say the same about your OB!  That fish tore that poor hull up!
Not sure Hobie will warranty those cracks :smt044

Lol! All these news reports about GWS attacks have made me really nervous about coconuts...

My wife just makes sure the premiums are paid up on my life insurance policy, gives me a kiss on the cheek and tells me to have fun.

Although I will now be nervously checking the grocery bags she brings home for any sign of coconuts. Can't be too careful.

Glad you are ok Ryan. Hobie plastic is pretty durable and can take a beating but the damage to your yak is the worst I have seen. May have to do with the hull shape, point, angle and speed of impact, maybe the loaded weight too. There will be more attacks because there are more sharks and more kayakers, simple probability. In SOCAL, coconuts may be a greater risk but on the SMC and central coast in the fall, well like I always say, it's just rockfish.

My pulse rate is up from just reading that!

Re: the Hobie plastic saving yr life - might it be the Hobie Drive that put it in danger in the first place? The guy in the morning was also in a Hobie. Were your two buddies in Hobies?

Has anyone run the numbers on this? I know the numbers are small and that there are non-peddle powered yaks that have been chomped, but it seems that Hobie kayaks are chomped more frequently than would be expected given their overall representation in the 'population' of kayaks in Norcal. Chi-squared test anyone?
