Don't we have enough fundraisers? What about the money going straight back into the game?

I think, just as a practical matter, there's always going to be a cash surplus for any "grassroots" group/club tournament/event. I know we don't want our organizers paying out of their own pockets, and it's just not possible to estimate costs right on the dot. So, why not have the surplus, plus a little thrown in on the top, to go to a cause we support? It's really pittance compared to the amount spent on gas, gear, and lodging.

Hah!  Didn't I bring that up for another tournament, and you took the other side of the argument.   :smt008  But yeah, I kind of think we're hitting fundraiser apathy as well as having too many events in general.

The first $1,300 of AOTY/DOTY $ does go "back into the game" by paying for Piscean Plaques and for "Big Fish" plaques.

In previous years the rest of the $ went to NCKA fees, and this year it went to PIF...and it turned out to be a substantial percentage of the $ that we were able to give to Hailey Pass.

I'm not gonna comment on other fundraisers or tourneys...but I do feel very strongly about PIF.

No, I do not think we "have enough" $ for PIF.

If we could have raised double or triple the $ for Mooch, Shicken and Hailey I would have been f*cking stoked, and I bet they would have been also.

I do not know what the future holds for PIF...

I personally do not think the main PIF raffle format is very sustainable and therefore was super stoked when PolePole offered to let AOTY/DOTY reg. fees go to PIF so we WOULD have a sustainable, steady source of income of PIF $ to help out NCKA members battling cancer/serious illness in the future.

And we already get a substantial amount of prizes donated...enough to guarantee awesome prizes for at LEAST top three in AOTY and DOTY (in addition to the Piscean Plaques and Big Fish Plaques).

My experience so far has been that it is a lot easier to get companies/stores to committ to donating when the entry fee $ is going to a good cause, rather than just going "back into the game".

If PolePole decides he wants the $ to go somewhere else, that is fine with me...but until then I will keep on channeling every dollar I possibly can into PIF.

Sincerely,

Jim

As far as I'm concerned, Big Jim is free to decide what to do with AOTY/DOTY.  I turned it over to him with no real expectations of owning any aspect of it.  Consider any feedback I have as equal weight to any feedback from any other member.   :smt008

Thanks Allen...for the vote of confidence/support, for allowing DOTY to grow into the cool comp it is becoming, AND for letting the $$ go to PIF.

I really appreciate it, I know the DOTY guys do, and for sure so do Porky and his family.

Cant comment on what it is like to fully go after a AOTY title, but I have great respect for those that do.

But we as a family really, truly appreciate it, I wish I could express how we feel about it. Were still blown away by the support. I have no family, so this type of support for my daughter was and is really touching. I love that little girl so much, to see her so sick was and still is really disturbing. These funds have made this mountain of bills manageable and and we cant thank you enough. All of you. When someone you love so much is so sick, you realize all the day to day stuff life brings, really doesn't mean much, for me even fishing or diving fall into that category. We are so very thankful for all the love, support, phone calls and mail. All these things made a huge difference in our real world lives.

I look forward to watching many more AOTY/DOTY epic races for victories as well as the guys just doing it for personal bests/fun.

Thank you!

These are the numbers I came up with by year. I don't know why 2012 has so many compared to the other years. I guess when Jim won in 2012 a lot of people gave up. I don't think 88 is really an increase based on the total membership increase we have had. The early years the club was a lot smaller and I bet the percentage of participants was much higher than today. A lot of the divers overlap the fisherman. Plus it's only one entry fee.

2014-88 fish  dive-34
2013-61 fish  dive-23
2012-204 fish  dive-16
2011-66
2010-63
2009-47
2008-36
2007-27

Been thinking about these numbers Rob...the numbers you posted show the total number of people paid...but today I took a look at the number of people that have actually entered at least one fish, and the numbers look like this (assuming I counted correctly  :smt002):

2014: 60 fish 36 dive
2013: 44 fish 23 dive
2012: 56 fish 16 dive
2011: 44 fish
2010: 46 fish
2009: 47 fish
2008: 36 fish
2007: 27 fish

So...if we think of particpation in AOTY as entering at least one fish rather than just paying the entrance fee, this is the year that we have had the most participation so far...

And we can see that DOTY participation has grown substantially and at least half as many divers as anglers are now playing.

I don't know what that means, if anything, but figured I would share.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

As percentages of total entries to those that entered fish.
2014-68%
2013-72%
2012-27%  there was a big push for sign ups to support NCKA that year
2011-66%
2010-73%
2009-100%
2008-100%
2007-100%

So from 2010 to present it has been about the same percentage enter ing fish. What that means I don't know either. If your diving and on here you will enter it looks like. Many do both now.

I guess it appears there really is no change in participation vs paying.

Personally we have made the rule change on central coast kayak fishing about closed mouth rule. If you have a live fish on the yak you will be penalized for open mouth as moderators deem fit. If the fish is dead u have no excuse close the mouth dont let rigamortus lose all ur points. You have all the time in the world to get a picture without further harming the fish.

I agree telling the difference between spots and smallies can be a pain in the ass with a picture we have contemplated combinding the 2 our selves wouldnt be such a bad idea imo.

I'm probably way outta line here...as I haven't discussed this with the committee and I still haven't received access to the AOTY/DOTY committee board...but I would like to see the mouth closed rule amended to say that either the top or bottom jaw must be touching the end of the trough (instead of both touching with mouth fully closed).
