Salmon opener April 5!!!!

I just wanted to post up the great news that ocean salmon season opens next Saturday, April 5th!!!

That is all... I'm just really excited about  it. Can't wait to pull on something with some shoulders!

I'm planning to be at the Cove for the opener.  Good luck where you are.   

I have seen some promising signs in southern Monterey Bay the last few days!!!

If I recall, Monterey tends to draw fish near shore a little sooner than other areas, right? Wasn't it early season in 2012 when Monterey lit up?

Time to take a look at the ol' calendar...

Bay has been lit up with sealife all season.  Should be interesting!!!

South of the gate, HMB to Pt Pinos is good early season. In kayak range, I would launch out of Monterey or Moss.

Been watching the north coast water temps the last 2 months.  Looks like the upwelling is starting to bring in the cold water too!

Bird- Yes it does! It looks like water temps are already nice and cool around Bodega.

The target areas out of Bodega look to be 8-10 miles out.

Yeah Scott:  2-3 weeks ago there was no purple on the map.  It's just getting cranked-up, when the spring winds start to blowin' it should really get cranking.  Will be interesting to see if the developing El Nino has any effect.  OK, now I'm starting to get excited.

Check out those SF Bay temps - any wonder why the butt bite has gone off!  No Sierra snow run-off.

Anything can happen early but it is best not to get too excited about the opener in early April in the Bodega area. The fish are almost always beyond yak range toward the vicinity of the weather buoy. Relax for a couple days and see if the bigger sport and party boats find and catch salmon and how many per rod. Your plans will become more effective if you know where the fish are. It's a long season and fish will come near the beach later on.

Charles - I hear ya about bodega this early. I'm just excited. I had a blast last year and ended the season with three beautiful salmon for my efforts. I hope to build on last years experience and see if I can do even better this season.

That said, I'm not against getting a little exercise even if I don't hear any positive reports. The more trolling I do early on, the longer I'll be able to stay out later in the season when I have the best chance of scoring.

GB2- Just for the sake of conversation, what water temp are you looking for on that map to call it a "target area"? I see what looks like low 50's just a couple miles offshore from Bodega.
