Not sure what you are seeing bad about that forecast? looks to me like some wind, and 3 feet at 13 seconds, or am I reading that wrong?  :smt007

It's the forecast of 21 knot wind that he referred to!

According to Crash's armchair school of meteorology, that forecast looks off by a day or two. We have shortwaves passing now, one more to pass tonight and early tomorrow, then a ridge will build. It's gonna blow, but Wednesday, Thursday look to be the worst. The ridge flattens and moves south giving us a break on Friday-Sunday.

Prefishing will be challenging but Saturday should be fine with some diurnal heating causing a north wind to 15kts by checkin time.

I'm running with this forecast for now. Tourney day looks fine.

I'm going to memorize this & run it in my head as a meditation mantra until I see the sand of the cove :smt044

Swell looks good, that wind forecast has been bouncing around, now at 4-11 mph for Sat.  Looks like the primary swell switches to South starting Thursday thru Sunday at least.

Excuse my ignorance John but what is the significance of a south swell?  I've heard it mentioned before but don't know why it's important.

Shelter cove is not sheltered from a south swell, making the launch a bit sporting.

In general, south swells originate in the southern hemisphere so they take longer to reach our shores...which means they will almost always be spaced further apart (longer intervals, like from 12-18 seconds between peaks). Whereas northern/western swells are closer together, like 6-10 second intervals. This means that every so often (could be minutes; could be hours), the south swell will reach the shoreline at the same time as the dominant N/W swell...to form a larger-than-normal wave.
The other thing about south swells...the waves it produces will hit the coastline from a different angle than normal. So certain beaches/launches will be less protected than normal. Like Shelter Cove, which faces to the south. Or Santa Cruz harbor...if the south swell is pumping then surfers are happy.
For fish it can mean a number of things. It obviously depends moreso on the region/area/structure...but I personally feel like a mixed swell has a negative effect on the bite (for halibut, rockfish, and other bottom-dwellers) because there is more surge due to a constant shuffling of water, so they hunker down and spend less time searching for food in the open.

I can throw up just fine in either a south, west, north or mixed swell.  So don't worry about me guys.
