Well that's interesting.

But at the same time, I'm not convinced that's a coho.

And looking through the pics of some of the NorCal fish, there are some there were obviously not taken in "live" state on the water.  Not that I care.

Its F*%$cking hatchery fish (manmade not natural) from Oregon or Washington and they swam away just fine.  I wetted the trough yada yada yada.  I didn't ask the fish to take the hook anyways.  If its such a big deal to everyone then I will ask for them to be deleted.  If I catch the fish a 100 miles up the coast its legal to keep and its not a wild fish so whats the deal whiners?

Well that's interesting.

You guys just crack me up.  Its simple to tell a coho.  First of all it had white gums.  Second, it had more green and third it fought and jumped around like a coho.  I have caught more ocean salmon on a kayak or boat then most of you guys on this board.  If you come up here I can put you on a salmon just as easy as anyone else who fishes for them up here.

Whose whining?  Either it's ok to CPR a not take fish or it's not.  Kayak Wars is a competition.  There are rules that we play by.  You'll most likely be the #1 salt water fisherman for the region.  We respect your fishing abilities.  Is it OK to score a king salmon out of season?  Or how about all the rockfish I caught before the opener while I was perch fishing?

Posting a COHO is the same as posting a rockfish out of season. On second thought posting a coho is probably worse than posting an out-of-season fish (in terms of citation issuance). It's more on par with posting yelloweye rockfish.

I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt there Rob, that you accidentally clicked "Coho" and meant to click King.  We can't see gums or hue clearly from your pics, and can't imagine what it fought like.

Again its a man made coho that some volunteer or DFW worker from Oregon or Washington took eggs or sperm from and then raised in concrete pools. If it was wild it wouldn't have left the water.  I have seen people on here put nets on them and spend time trying to identify them as well as even keeping them not knowing it was a coho.  I have also witnessed people catching salmon at an NCKA tournament with barbed hooks and keeping it.

BTW nobody said anything last year about similar posts.

wtf is going on in here?  Two points:

1.  For kayak wars. There are rules. The only relevant rule seems to say that out of season and zero take fish may be submitted:

Quote
All Sharks must be released for safety reasons.  All other fish have the option of being kept and harvested (pending your local game laws).

2.  Coho can't be targeted of retained in California except in Lake Oroville. I have no idea if a hatchery coho is an ESA fish under the law on e it crosses south of the 42°00 line. I've always thought it was stupid that we can't keep hatchery coho, and we see plenty of them. I personally won't risk it but it isn't for ethical reasons. It's because I don't want to get a ticket and have to put in the energy of fighting it. Is taking a photo of one breaking the law?  Beats me.

I would say the relevant rule is contained in #2:

Quote
All entrants and competitors agree to abide by all local and federal boating, recreational, and game laws

So is it illegal to take a picture of a hatchery coho out of the water?

I'd say this is something that should be self policed by competitors in fair play principles.  If you catch an undersized or out of season or no retention fish, should you be allowed to CPR that fish for a tourney? AOTY rules say no. Kayak wars rules are not very clear on it but the rules are kind of all over the place anyways.

I disagree. This just leads to mob mentality and people getting defensive over a set of unwritten rules. That's no way to govern a contest. If photographing a hatchery coho out of water is illegal, the fish should be disallowed. If not, it stands. If you want to give Rob shit because he offended your unwritten notion of fair play and he wants to get aggressively defensive, go ahead. I'll be out fishing.

I still want to know if it's legal to CPR a hatchery coho. Maybe I'll look it up later.
